Microsoft is changing its public instant messaging connectivity (PIC) license requirements for Office Communications Server connectivity to the Windows Live and AOL public IM networks. Now, customers with Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Standard CAL (or equivalent Software Assurance rights) will no longer require an additional license to connect with the millions of people who use Windows Live and AOL for instant messaging and presence. This change took place in July for Windows Live, and is scheduled for AOL in October 2009.

The Office Communications Server 2007 R2 XMPP Gateway enables IM and presence communication between Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and select XMPP-based IM and presence providers.
Overview
The eXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) Gateway for Office Communications Server allows Office Communications Server users to communicate with users who use an XMPP-based IM and presence provider such as Google Talk and Jabber. Once the gateway is deployed in an Office Communications Server environment, users hosted on Office Communications Server can do the following:
- Add or delete users on an XMPP environment as contacts
- Communicate with users on XMPP environment through one-on-one IM conversations.

Stephen Elop and Nokia’s Kai Öistämö announced Microsoft and Nokia are forming a global alliance to design, develop and market mobile productivity solutions for the growing needs of the mobile professional. The two companies will work together to bring Microsoft Office Mobile and related communications and collaboration software and services to Nokia smartphones.
The two companies will begin collaborating immediately on the design, development and marketing of mobile productivity solutions, bringing Microsoft Office Mobile and Microsoft business communications, collaboration and device management software to Nokia’s Symbian smartphones. The solutions will be available for a broad range of Nokia smartphones, starting with the company’s business optimized range, the Nokia Eseries.
Next year, Nokia intends to start shipping Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile on Nokia smartphones, followed by other Office applications, and related software and services in the future.
The Windows Mobile version of Office Communicator 2007 R2 has just been updated. Communicator Mobile is strongly positioned as a desktop replacement application allowing OCS-enabled users to receive and place work calls over a mobile phone, exchange instant messages, and keep their presence indicators up-to-date while on the road.
This new version is available now and will be also compatible with the soon-to-be-released Windows Mobile 6.5, offering even richer integration to its users.
Communicator Mobile 2007 R2 includes additions such as the Join Conference feature, where instead of dialing in and entering complicated conference entry codes, users can now join a meeting with the click of a button. This capability is available for all types of meetings that are scheduled using the new UC Conferencing capability in Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2.
What’s new?
Communicator Mobile 2007 R2 update is far more than a standard QFE, with several new key features:
· Click-to-join conferences! No more pesky dial-in numbers or passcodes to remember!
· A better Call via Work experience, where callbacks are automatically accepted. Just click Call via Work, and place the phone to your ear. After a quick call setup, you’ll be connected!
· Support for new Windows Mobile Homescreens, on Windows Mobile 6.5 and higher devices.
· The ability to call any number via Work, on Windows Mobile 6.5 and higher devices. This means that you can even dial extensions from your mobile phone!
· Detection for when the phone is roaming: by default, Communicator does not sign in to roaming networks.
