XP was probably perfect for this application. Short of a text based Linux distro XP has the lowest hardware fingerprint of any of the current OS's.

Or on Windows Server HPC running on the new Cray "desktop". Co'mon, admit it... how many of you went to the Cray site and config'd out a Cray to see how high you could get the price? I hit 6 digits without even trying.... :-)
