Windows Server 2008 R2 – DirectAccess RC Step-by-Step Guide released

ws2008 r2 blog logo DirectAccess is a new feature in the Windows® 7 and Windows Server® 2008 R2 operating systems that enables remote users to securely access intranet shares, Web sites, and applications without connecting to a virtual private network (VPN). This paper contains an introduction to DirectAccess and instructions for setting up a test lab to demonstrate DirectAccess with a simulated Internet, intranet, and home network using the Release Candidate versions of Windows 7 and Window Server 2008 R2.

With any luck (time permitting), I’ll be using the end result of this guide next week for my R2 demonstrations in Houston.  It’s complicated and time consuming so no promises.  I have a ton of honey dues this week leading up to Mommies Day.

Get the guide @ http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=8d47ed5f-d217-4d84-b698-f39360d82fac.

I've just configured my lab, that I'll be using for a demo later this month. I used this guide and it took me about 4 hours to configure and test everything, on a single physical Hyper-V box.

This guide is really amazing, but it has a few small bugs, and if anyone know where and how to report them please let me know...

Ronni,

I responded directly on your blog.  Send me the corrections and I will get them in the right hands.

Thanks,

Keith

I was just looked at the differences in SKUs and noticed that DirectAccess, BrancheCache, Bitlocker (and togo), Applocker, VDI enhanements, and boot from VHD are NOT in Pro version.

Whatever marketing goon at MS decided this should be fired. :)

Hi Keith, thanks for providing all the timely info on DirectAccess.  Have been trying to use it on my demo at Interop next week, but info has been miserable.  Glad your is up and will spend the hours later this week.  Thanks!!

Jordan, your comment is unfounded.  There has to be some differentiator between Pro and Enterprise, otherwise who would buy the Enterprise edition?

If you want those features, buy Enterprise, end of.

Jordon,

The difference in the price from Professional to Ultimate is $20.  If you want those features, I think they are well worth the extra twenty.
