Hello! Thanks for checking out my blog. We just started doing Launch Events for Windows Server 2008. I got to do one of the first events Yesterday in San Antonio, Texas. Thanks home state crowd. It was a blast to present to you. As promised I have the slide decks I used available for you. I haven't had a chance to put them on my own site yet, or on a corporate site yet. LAUNCH DAY. Windows Server 2008 VS 2008 SQL 2008 Q&A

About once every 6 months or so I go MSN search or Google my name. Everyone does it right?

Well I put in "John Weston Microsoft" it was amazing how many hits came back. My two blogs, events I have done, webcasts, Radio shows, user groups all kinds of things. I even found many sites that refer to my online stuff.

Office 2007 that you get at Launch events

Apparently the directions to Download/install the Office 2007 that we are giving away at our events isn't very clear. When you download it, you are prompted for a trial key, don't use that one use the key give out in your kit from the event. Also be careful of the printing on the keys. The Ink will smear.

As many of you are aware, I actually test our stuff to make sure it's working. I signup for my webcasts and test that process. I signup for our live events and test that. I have a TechNet subscription. I do this so I can see what you see and hopefully head off any issues.

So I grabbed one of the Launch 2007 Resource Kits at my show on Thursday and just got around to testing the Office 2007 download. I encountered the following instructions:

Office 2007 Product Download Procedure

To install your copy of Office Professional 2007 and Office Groove 2007, please follow these steps:

Click on the link below for the product you'd like to download and install - a new window will open.
On the product page, click "Try now for FREE!".
Log-in to Passport (Windows Live ID).
Please provide Registration information and click "Continue".
On the download page, click "Download Now". Please use the Product Key provided in the kit you received at the launch event to unlock your product. Disregard the trial Product Key presented on this page*.
Product download times will vary.
Once the download completes, click "Continue".
You will receive an email during the download process – please DISREGARD the Product Key in that email and ONLY use the Product Key provided in the kit you received at launch.

The net net is that the key you received with your kit, is the non time bombed key to use. Sorry for any confusion on this. I guess we decided to leverage the download area which is very very fast. I received the download at 1.8meg per second. Smokin.

Novell Religion

Novell Religion

I have met several people here that are religious about Novell. They love Everything RED! I am not going to try to change their minds. It is not worth the time.

I am in the keynote here at GWAVACON and a Novell VP of marketing is talking. He is discussing the November 2 partnership with Microsoft. Most of Novell’s customers, partners, and developers like the partnership. The only people that don’t like it is Novell’s open source community.

Marketing budget came up. Man do they have envy. Especially envy of Microsoft and Apple. He then said Novell has 1.6 Billion in the bank. Maybe they should spend some of that on marketing. Maybe they should use the new MS partnership on marketing. Then they talked about viral marketing like this blogging. The Novell VP had a blog but stopped posting. Here I am blogging about it and I know 1000’s of people will read this…. Here I am giving positive coverage for them for free..

By the way, both presenters were using Powerpoint and Windows XP to do their presentations....

Novell an interesting Competitor perspective

This week I have been attending a Novell conference hosted by a company called GWAVA. GWAVA is a company that makes sofware to work with Novell servers, Groupwise, and monitoring software.

Here at Microsoft we are tasked with going out a couple of times a year to understand the competition. As you know, a couple of months ago Microsoft and Novell signed an agreement about support, licensing and Linux. I have had several customers ask me about Novell. I haven't worked on a Novell Server in 14 years so I thought I would attend this conference. I am not wearing my standard MS logoed clothes. But they know I work for Microsoft. It's Giant on my Attendee badge. I have many observations. I will break them down to a couple of blog entries.

General observations: Most the people here work for school districts, or some type of educational institution. All the presenters are running Window XP, PowerPoint, and Internet Explorer. Where is the Linux? Open office? I haven't seen any yet. They even have OLD Xboxes in the vendor area for us to play with.

One session late Sunday was done by a consultant. She was great. Her 2 hr presentation was about how to move Groupwise to a pure Microsoft environment. So basically keeping Novell's email, but getting rid of Netware, Linux Edirectory. She went on page after page of how to upgrade,patch, etc to prepare for the conversion. Then we got to the moment of moving the files to Windows Server. She pulled up a slide that said, to copy the files to the server use RichCOPY(go find the latest version on TECHNET Magazine) or get a friend that works at Microsoft to give you version 3.5 of ROBO copy that is MS internal. No mention of NWCopy. This guy on the front row (in a RED Novell Jacket) said "But what about NWCOPY?" The presenter went on to explain that tool was OK, it wasn't multi threaded like the MS tools. Too funny. Here I am at a Novell conference and the discussion is all about Microsoft Tools. More in my next Post.
