If you're trying to have your UNIX and/or Linux clients authenticate against Active Directory or in any way integrate with your Windows Server infrastructure, I have good news for you. One of the major players in this space has just been acquired.

Before I go any further, I should say that if you you're trying to do this and haven't heard about Vintela, you're probably not doing a good job :-)

Now maybe you haven't heard the acquisition news yet. Take a look:

Antes de mais nada, Eu deixo claro que se você está tentando fazer isto e não ouviu falar da Vintela, você provavelmente não está indo muito bem :-) 

Mas talvez você apenas não saiba da última. Veja:

If you read the article I just pointed to, you learned about the acquisition of Vintela by Quest Software. But what does that really mean? Well, it means a lot!

For starters, Quest is the maker of "Recovery Manager for AD", "Password Manager for AD", "Migration Manager for AD" and "Spotlight on AD", just to name a few. You can find more information and get a sense of how technically strong they are by looking at their current AD tools at:

This means that Vintela will now benefit from the overall experience and the more mature infrastructure that Quest built over the years: searchable support knowledge base, support case management system, discussion forums, update downloads, international presence, training, seminars, etc. Just take a look at this page:

Quest is experienced in acquisitions. They have been growing that way for a while now. They have acquired Wingra and Imceda in 2005, Aelita in 2004, Big Brother and Sitraka in 2002, RevealNet in 2001, MessageWise and QMaster in 2000.

Quest also has a great relationship with Microsoft, with the highest possible partner level and ISV recognition. They won the "ISV Partner of the Year Award" last year. Here is a link:

My overall feeling is that the combination of Quest and Vintela is very promising, especially around AD.

However, they're not the only ones out there. Up and comer Centrify also has its unique approach to the problem of helping UNIX and Linux clients integrate with your Active Directory domain. If you have that problem to solve, make sure to check them as well: 

  

Minha intuição diz que a combinação da Quest com a Vintela é promissora, especialmente no que diz respeito ao AD.

Entretanto, eles não são os únicos. A iniciante Centrify tem uma abordagem diferente para o problema de ajudar clientes UNIX e Linux a integrar-se com um domínio do Active Directory. Se você precisa resolver este problema, é melhor dar uma olhada neles também:

I should mention I have met people from all three companies (Quest, Vintela and Centrify) in person and even visited Centrify's headquarters in Mountain View, CA (they are pretty close to the Microsoft Silicon Valley office where I am based). One of my customers is investigating this solution and I had to do my homework.

They both have interesting products and have a slightly different approach to this problem, which makes them both excelent solutions. My recommendation would vary depending on what exactly is your focus when integrating those non-Windows clients.

However, I must say that this move by Quest and Vintela will make it extra hard on Centrify, a much smaller company focusing specifically on the Active Directory integration part of the solution. 

  

Devo mencionar que eu conheci pessoalmente pessoas das três empresas (Quest, Vintela e Centrify) e até visitei a sede da Centrify em Mountain View, Califórnia (eles ficam bem perto do escritório da Microsoft no Vale do Silício onde eu trabalho). Um dos meus clientes está investigando esta solução e eu precisei fazer o meu dever de casa.

 Ambos tem produtos interessantes e uma abordagem ligeiramente diferente para este problema, o que faz de ambos excelentes soluções. Minha recomendação varia de acordo com o seu foco na integração destes clientes não-Windows.

Entretanto, eu devo dizer que este passo da Quest e Vintela tornam as coisas mais difíceis para a Centrify, uma empresa bem menor focada especificamente na parte da solução que diz respeito à integração com o Active Directory.
