Microsoft recently announced the availability of a beta release of a new server-based business performance management application. The codenamed is “Maestro”.

This is a the new application that leverages Office components like SharePoint and Excel to help organizations perform deep analysis of complex data using Balanced Scorecards and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

The idea os to gather data points from all over the company systems and automatically consolidate into something that a high-level executive can analyze in just a few seconds. The end result is typically a spreadsheet or chart with those aggregated indicators broken down by geography or business unit.

The real value here is in the word "automatically". In most companies, this is done manually after multiple meetings between those executives and the poor guys that have to crunch the numbers. In the end, the executives don't get exactly what they're looking for and give up on trying to get there. To "fix it", companies employ a person or team whose sole task is to manually get the data from several sources, work it on Excel and create a few PowerPoint slides for management. Many times this is done monthly or quarterly. Doing it more frequently would be too much work.

Beyond the automation, one key change in the process with Maestro is the idea that those KPIs and their agreggation are created in a user-friendly environment that the end users can handle. On the other side, there are powerful data analysis tools to allow the hardcore data people to connect whatever the business folks defined to the data sources.

A Microsoft acaba de anunciar a versão beta de um novo aplicativo para servidores que faz gerenciamento de performance empresarial. O nome-código é "Maestro".

Este novo aplicativo utiliza componentes do Office como o SharePoint e o Excel para ajudar empresas a fazer uma análise profunda de dados complexos, usando "Balanced Scorecards" e indicadores chave de performance (KPIs).

A idéia é coletar dados vindos de todos os sistemas da empresa e automaticamente consolidar em also que um executivo de alto nível pode analisar em apenas alguns segundos. O resultado final é em geral uma planilha ou gráficos com estes indicadores agregados, detalhados por região ou filial.

O importante aqui é o termo "automaticamente". Na maioria das empresas, isto é feito manualmente após diversas reuniões entre os executivos e os coitados que processam os números. No final, os executivos não recebem exatamente o que estão procurando e desistem de tentar chegar lá. Para "consertar as coisas", empresas empregam uma pessoa ou equipe cuja única tarefa é pegar os dados de várias fontes, trabalhar no Excel e criar slides no PowerPoint para a administração. Muitas vezes isto é feito mensal or trimestralmente. Fazer isto mais freqüentemente seria muito trabalho.

Além da automação, uma mudança básica no Maestro é o fato dos KPIs e a forma de agregá-los serem criados em um ambiente amigável que os usuários finais conseguem usar. No outro lado, poderosas ferramentas de análise de dados permitem aos pessoal que trata dos dados conectar o que foi definido pelos executivos nas fontes de dados.

This is an evolution of what is called the "Business Scorecards Accelerator".  If you can't wait for the release of Maestro, this can take you a look way, defining you KPIs and hierarchy, showing them in nice pre-defined graphical representations and linking it to data sources in your company's back-end systems.

Integration with Office is a given, since that is what executives are familiar with anyway. On the other side, this new release will take it to the next level, relying heavily on SQL Server 2005's improved abilities around Business Intelligence, including Reporting Services.

As with the Accelerator, Maestro is based on SharePoint Services and includes special components to allow users to get an attractive look into complex data aggregations.  

The Beta 1 is now available (by invitation only) and the marketing and support materials are being finalized as we speek. Just yesterday a downloaded a Virtual PC image that we will be using for demos. It's looking good :-)

  

A integração com o Office é o caminho natural, já que é o que os executivos já usam mesmo. No outro lado, esta nova versão progride bastante, explorando os recursos avançados de Business Inteligence do SQL Server 2005, incluindo o Reporting Services.

Como no Accelerator, o Maestro é baseado no SharePoint Services e inclui componentes especiais para dar aos usuários uma visão atraente das agregações de dados.

A versão Beta 1 está disponível agora (somente por convite) e o material de marketing e suporte está sendo concluído neste momento. Ontem mesmo eu baixei uma imagem para Virtual PC que nós vamos usar em demos. Está uma beleza :-)
