A new Microsoft TechNet UK webcast series titled ‘MCS Talks Infrastructure Architecture’ that will run from August 2008 to December 2008. It will consist of a series of 10 webcasts, each detailing a different aspect of Enterprise or Infrastructure architecture.
This first session will introduce the “MCS Talks Infrastructure Architecture” webcast series, giving an overview of the series and what’s to come. We will then move in to an overview session looking at the general architecture strategies of specific technology areas, such as adopting Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 and show some real benefits from their deployment. Datacentre consolidation is also a serious consideration for many so we’ll be looking how Microsoft Hyper-V and the System Center suite of tools can be used to accelerate this and ensure long term reliability from this approach. Finally we’ll cover some of the other virtualization strategies we’re seeing, such as when and why we would look to virtualize particular workloads, how virtualization can support branch office models and remote working and finally Microsoft overall virtualization storey, including Presentation and Application virtualization

Office Business Application (OBA) Sample Application Kit for PeopleSoft
So, you're probably asking yourself: what is OBA, and why should I care?? OBAs are essentially a new breed of composite application that you build using the Office Platform. OBAs at their essence are made up of three major pieces: i) the LOB system (e.g. SAP, PeopleSoft, or Dynamics), ii) A customized Office client (e.g. custom task pane using Visual Studio), and iii) SharePoint customizations (e.g. Business Data Catalog (BDC)) Web part. The value of OBAs derives from the fact that by building them you can integrate specific parts of the LOB systems in your organization directly into the Office interface that your information workers use on a daily basis--think Sales data integrated into Excel 2007 which enables you to use the native functionality of Excel and a customized Excel client to read/write data. This same idea applies to the SharePoint environment, where developers can also create views into data using different service-bound Web parts. The net for OBA development is that if your orgamization uses Office in their daily operations and you're not building OBAs, then you're missing an opportunity to leverage your existing infrastructure (as opposed to building and supporting separate LOB applications).
For more information on OBA, I would suggest the following resources:
1. Six Office Business Applications (MS Press) or Programming Microsoft Office Business Applications (MS Press).
2. Overview of an OBA: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb614538.aspx.
3. Overview of OBA Solution Patterns: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb614541.aspx.
4. My blog (http://blogs.msdn.com/steve_fox/) where I've listed out some additional resources to check out.
So, with the above in hand what is this OBA Sample Application Kit for PeopleSoft?
In many cases, developers don't have the knowledge on how to programmatically integrate Office applications with LOB systems. What this kit provides is guidance on how you can integrate with Web services that have been generated from within PeopleSoft and then consume those services within a .NET and managed code environment. The OBA Sample Application Kit for PeopleSoft (one in a series of kits) includes a whitepaper, installation document, source code, and client-side binaries (server-side (MOSS) code is discussed in the documents how to deploy) for you to use and learn how you integrate PeopleSoft programmatically into your Office system.
The goal of the kit is to provide developers with some information on how they can go ahead and learn how to programmatically integrate PeopleSoft with Office (specifically Outlook 2007 and MOSS 2007), thus providing you with specific knowledge around Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) - a component technology within Visual Studio 2008 that enables you to build Office solutions, the MOSS 2007 BDC and the integration with Web services, and more generically the use of Web services developed using PeopleTool within .NET and the Visual Studio IDE.
I hope you enjoy the kit, and if you're looking for something on SAP integration, check out the OBA Sample Application Kit for SAP: http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/obasapsak.

PS There was an issue with the source code download--empty zip file noted on 04/20/08. I've uploaded the bits again, so this problem should now be resolved. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Nice blog post from Ben Gardner on using Microsoft OneNote and Microsoft SharePoint
"One of the less well known features of OneNote is the capacity to create shared notebooks. We have combined OneNote 2007 with SharePoint 2007 to create an excellent team knowledge management tool, which we refer to as 'OnePoint'."

Tropical Shipping provides containerized shipping services, cargo transfer, and other freight services. For many years, the company’s systems for enterprise messaging and related functions were based on IBM Lotus Domino and Notes. However, Tropical Shipping wanted to better integrate these systems into the company’s Active Directory®–based IT environment and to reduce Notes licensing expenses. In 2007, Tropical Shipping began deploying a comprehensive communication and collaboration solution with Microsoft® Exchange Server 2007 and Microsoft Office SharePoint® Server 2007 as its foundation. Although deployment is still in progress, the new solution is already supporting more streamlined IT management and more effective employee communication, resulting in improved productivity. It also provides a flexible, efficient path for migrating the company’s Notes applications in the near future.

The Microsoft Assessment and Planning Solution Accelerator is an agentless toolkit that will find computers on a network and perform a detailed inventory of the computers using Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), the Remote Registry Service, or the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). Using this data, MAP will assess and report whether computers can run Windows Vista, Microsoft Office 2007 and Microsoft Application Virtualization (formerly SoftGrid). Assessments for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista also include device driver availability and recommendations for hardware upgrades that may be required.
MAP includes features for gathering performance metrics from computers you are considering for consolidation using Hyper-V in addition to Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2. Using the performance metrics and a model virtual server host computer, you can generate reports that recommend placement of the physical servers in a virtual server environment.Other new reports include a Security Center Assessment for client computers, a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 inventory report as well as an enhanced virtual machine inventory report to help you assess your virtualization efforts to date.
MAP incorporates the assessment features provided by the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Solution Accelerator, including localization of the Windows Vista assessment reports in French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese.
For home users and users with a few Windows XP computers to migrate, use the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor to understand the readiness of your computer for Windows Vista.
