Windows Mobile 6.1 - my favourite bits

Published 08 April 08 06:52 AM

I've been playing with Windows Mobile 6.1 for the last few days, so thought I'd share some of my favourite features.

Today screen - minus Exchange E-mail/calendar (see below)

About

Exchange Auto-discover

Now there's no need to know your CAS server URL - all you need is your email address/password, and Windows Mobile will use the Exchange auto-discover service to automatically provision your device for push email/calendar/tasks/security.

Type your email address and password

Choose what you want to sync from Exchange

Done! Notice the Outlook E-Mail and calendar appointments

Task Manager

For those memory-intensive or hung apps - there is now a proper Task Manager to view/kill.

System Settings

Task Manager

Domain Enroll

Make your device an AD domain member for device management/security.

Connections screen

Similar to Auto-discover - enter your email/password

(I'm not connected to the corporate network right now hence I didn't actually enroll my device)

[UPDATE]

Threaded txt

Office Mobile

Yeah this has been there for a while, but it now supports Office 2007 file formats out-of-the-box.

Once I get the right adapter for VGA output from my phone - I'm aiming to do customer presentations from my phone :)

Hi there. I notice from some of your videos etc you've been using the treo 750 for a while now. Tell me, if you were able to replace it right now with another handset, would you stick withthe 750, or go to a different handset? A lot of Microsofties and partners I've bumped in to over the past six months seem to be using Samsung Blackjacks. Would you choose that, or something else? What's your current preference for the phone - don't you find it too thick, or do you like the strong processor and the palm-modified windows mobile?

Hi Hilary,

Yes I've had the Treo 750 for about 7 or 8 months now and am very happy with it.

My previous phone was a Samsung Blackjack (running WM5 - WM6 wasn't available when I had it) which was a great phone - it was thinner, lighter and had much better battery life (using the extended battery).

However I find that the Treo, although slightly larger, is "nicer" to use.  The screen is bigger, it is a touch-screen, and I find the keyboard nicer to use (I have large fingers).

The Palm-modified version of WM doesn't do much for me, and personally I prefer WM Standard to Professional (less key-presses to perform phone actions).  At the time my major reason for changing phone was that WM6 was available for the Treo before the Blackjack.

Oh and the Treo came with a car charger - I only charge when driving :)

how did you get wm6.1 for your 750?  I have 90 treo 750s, all plagued by memory problems.  Hoping 6.1 will fix the problems.  Palm tells me they havent "announced" 6.1 for the Treo 750.

# jkruse said on April 27, 2008 7:38 PM:

Correct this isn't an official Palm release - it is a test build I obtained internally.

Unfortunately I'm not sure when Palm will official announce 6.1 availability, but hopefully not too long!

Re memory problems - my phone does "seem" more stable with this build than it did with 6.0, although I don't have any data or metrics to back that up.

I'ld like to try the version you're using, since my treo750 has the "touchscreen problem" I'ld like to see if this version resolve that problem that make's me nuts...could you tell me how to obtain that?

Thanks...

You'll have to contact Palm to get updated WM builds for your Treo.
