Ramblings of a Microsoft.com PM

The day to day ramblings of Jim Scardelis, Release Manager turned Program Manager in Microsoft.com.

Deployment automation...`

One of the side projects that I'm working on in Microsoft.com is called our "Deployment Automation 1.0" project. The goal is to codify some policies, processes, and standards around how we deploy projects into the operational environment. This is a big project, with people involved from several development teams, operations and management, many of whom have found different ways of doing this -- ranging from hand-written scripts to .msi files developed using a number of tools.

Wish us luck.

Oh, and if you have a favorite setup / deployment tool, I'd love to hear about it in a comment ....

Hi,

I am developing a tool related to automating the Deployment in the IIS server. The tool will create website and virtual folders in the iis and set the properties as required. It'll save time in creating the site/folders one by one and will help in less manual mistakes. The deployment team will have to install the certificates manually.

Currently, i am able to create website and virtual folder in the IIS (given the name of the server or the localhost) and set properties in the most of the tabs. Just read ur article. It is good, so wanted to knw if there is already some progress in this field. That will help me a lot, as am a newbie to ADSI. The code i am writing is sing ASP.Net and C#.

That's all about my progress in here. Will be glad to listen from you.

About Jim Scardelis

I'm a Program Manager on the Microsoft.com Content Delivery Infrastructure team - We're the group that is responsible for a lot of the software that the Microsoft.com Web site runs on. Prior to moving to the PM team, I was a Release Manager for Microsoft.com (hence the title of this blog) for over six years. In my new position, my focus has changed from the relationship & processes between the development teams & operations towards those between the development teams & stakeholders. Oh, and I get to work on features sometimes too. :)
