I installed this - Server is now stuck on "Configuring Updates - Step 3 of 3 - 53%" - has been for hours.

So be careful with the upgrade - make sure you're backed up first as usual!

I'm still stuck with this though, anyone have any ideas?

Gareth - is this an HP box with the Proliant Support Pack installed? If so, there is a KB referenced in the main article which explains the issue - there will be an update from HP provided soon. If this is not the case, please drop me a mail using the email link at the top of this page.

Installed well (Upgrade from RC1). On the virtual machines i upgraded intergration components. VM-Bus Network does still not work (Error 10). Have to use legacy network driver instead.

Also on backup the VVS Virtual Writer does not work. "VSS Virtual Writer not found"

Any Ideas ?

Uninstalling and reinstalling integration components did the trick - seems upgrade does work differently.

For the VSS-Writer i am thinking about remove/add hyper-v role. Do I have to use VM export to get the vms back or is there an other way? If I add the hyper-v role again do i have to upgrade to Hyper RTM again ?

...go to an *update* program that will not install on Vista SP2; it says "This update does not apply to your system." How to get the original tools? We have found the update for the tools to work with SP2 as well, but it won't install either. RSAT installs but doesn't say anything about managing Hyper-V.

Steve - this is the download link KB article - these should install on Vista SP2: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952627. Let me know if you still have a problem with applying the update. The Hyper-V tools are not part of RSAT in Vista (they are in Windows 7). Once the update is installed, Hyper-V Manager should appear under Administrative Tools.

Steve - can you confirm the value of the registry key BuildLabEx under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion as well as the file size (in bytes) of the update you're attempting to apply along with the exact name of the update. There may be some log files I would need to grab too to investigate. Let's verify the build first though.

Steve - one other thing I should have verified. What SKU of Vista are you running - the update only applied to Business, Enterprise and Ultimate. (IOW, if it's a Home SKU, this is expected).

It is Vista Business. I even noticed that was in that registry that way.

A co worker watched this video, and they only mention it will work on Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 so I guess Vista isn't supported any more:

That matches that the only tools I can find now are for Windows 7. I will check back later but it looks like we are down to upgrading a PC or finding a NIC that works with VMWare.

Steve - correct in that Vista is not *supported* for managing an R2 based server, but it does work (mostly - couple of small caveats), and has nothing to do with not being able to install it. Vista is entirely supported for managing "v1" (Windows Server 2008/Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008) Hyper-V installations. Would you be able to email me the cbs.log file from \windows\logs\cbs (preferably zipped). If you use the email option at the top of this page, I'll reply then you can reply with the log. That will tell us what is going on here.

I think we found the answer...the Vista tools will only install on Vista SP1. On a PC with SP2 applied the tools refuse to install. On SP1, the second patch refuses to install. So, the only way we can connect to Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is:

1) find a PC with Vista SP1

2) install the tools

3) upgrade it to SP2

4) install the update to the tools for SP2

So far this seems to be "working;" we are at the permissions error noted in your blog.
