Hello,
While perusing this link, I came across a number of utilities that are quite useful during the initial stages of incident response. It seems that MS decided to lock down all security-related downloads to genuine Windows installations. That leaves us security engineers who utilize other platforms as their primary environment out in the cold.
I agree with their position to lock down OS updates, however I question the wisdom behind locking down tools such as PortReporter.
Could you shed some light on this situation?

Thank you,

Matt's talking about the Windows Genuine Advantage process. In order to download certain things you need to prove to Microsoft that you have a genuine, activated version of Windows.

I realize that this can be a problem to users who aren't using Windows to do the downloading. The problem is that there are a lot of people who do use Windows... but haven't paid for it. They "borrowed" a CD from a friend, for example. By restricting these free downloads to users with an activated version of Windows, we are providing value to our paying customers while hopefully encouraging others to buy a legitimate copy.

I don't see this changing anytime soon -- we've had very little negative feedback on this. Sorry Matt, you may need to fire up your legit copy of XP to get this stuff.
