The "U" Word

Making Windows safe for Unix people since 1995

An end to stupidity - the solution to the Crimson Room puzzle

I have been enlightened. Herewith is the solution to the Crimson Room puzzle, but it's been “rot13”ized.

(What's that, you say? rot-13? That means each letter has been replaced with the letter 13 characters later in the alphabet. A is replaced with N; Z is replaced with M; etc. For UNIX users, this is translated easily with the “tr” command, to wit:

tr [a-mn-zA-MN-Z] [n-za-mN-ZA-M] < sourcefile > destfile

If you don't have UNIX, install SFU, save this text, then do the rot13 thing.)

And if you want to watch a lot of other people struggle, see here and here.

Here are the instructions.

Lbh cvpx hc 2 evatf: 1 snyyf sebz gur phegnva (xrrc bcravat naq pybfvat vg),

For crying out loud - here you go:

You pick up 2 rings: 1 falls from the curtain (keep opening and closing it),
1 ring is on the bowl next to the stereo

2 keys (gold and silver): 1 key is on the window, 1 under the pillow

CD Case: In the drawer, you don't need it

Power-Chord: Use the keys to open the drawer

Mistery Box: Use the other key to open the drawer

Ordinary Key: Plug the power chord into CD player and open the cd slot, there
is another key

Metal Rod: Lift the pillow and on the bed, there is a metal rod

Battery: On the far side of the bed

Cassete: Below the desk which supports the CD player

Fit the rings & metal rod on the mistery box. Open mistery box, fit in
cassette player and battery, play the movie

The dancing man points to a spot on the screen. Mouse click that point.

Open the rectangular slot. The code is 1994, use the key open the safe

You get a screw driver in the safe

Use the screw driver to crack the door and go out.

I wouldn't mind, but as a student of Human Computer Interaction and Usability Engineering, I know *why* it sucks :)

The whole thing was fine except the whole shaking the curtain thing, no-one would've actually clicked on the curtain thinking "Oh yes, I'll shake it and maybe something will fall down". That and it's a bit cuky trying to work out what will happen if you click a given spot...I'm sure like all of you, I clicked near enough every damned pixel of every damned view!

Wow... You all are idiots. The Crimson Room was so easy... Ok...
Here goes...
1. Click on the plate looking thing next to the boxes and the radio. You'll see a ring. Pick it up.
2. Next, Click under the dresser with the radio on it... You'll see a tape. Pick it up.
3. Next, Click on the pillow on the bed. The pillow will float. You'll see a key. Pick it up.
4. After that, open the curtain. You'll see a small silver key in the windowsill.
5. Click on the curtain 6 more times. Something will fall out of the curtain. Pick it up. It is a ring.
6. Use the gold key with the drawer on the left, and the silver key with the drawer on the right.
7. They will unlock. Open both drawers and take the contents out.
8. Use the power supply cable with the radio.
Turn on the radio by clicking the button at the top left, the radio will be lighted. Click on the CD-ROM drive. It willl open. There is a key. Get it.
9. Click around the perimiter of the bed and find a battery.
10. Lift up the pillow on the bed and click around near where the pillow was. You'll get a metal stick.
11. Ok... Then, click on the red box. Use the thin ring with the hole on the right, the thick with the hole on the left.
12. Use the metal stick with the rectangular area on the box.
13. Click on the box to open it.
14. Use the blue battery with the empty space next to the battery already in the box.
15. Use the tape with the tape area below the batteries. Click on the box.
16. You'll see a movie. The man dances, and at the end, he point towards a spot. It will be marked with a star. Put your mouse there QUICKLY, before the star disappears. Then the man disappears. Do NOTHING. Then the lighted movie background disappears. Click on the spot where your mouse is. It may take a few clicks. A red square will appear. Click on the square. A safe will appear.
17. The safe says: 0000. Click on the numbers until they say: 1994.
18. Click on the key that was not used, then click on the lock. The safe will open.
There is a screw driver. Take it. Click on the screwdriver, then click on the doorknob a few times. It will fall. Click on the hole the knob left on the door. The door opens. You have beaten the Crimson Room.

Well, I finally got it! Had some difficulty finding the battery. The code did not work in the English Version. I had to go into the room under japanese version and then the code worked right away! A nice little challenge. =)
