Sky Player on Windows 7 launches!

Sky Player, Sky’s online TV service launches on Windows 7 today creating a new and innovative way for people in the UK to watch live and on demand TV from Sky on a PC.  The service is simple and easy to use and gives Windows 7 users access to the wide range of high-quality live and on demand pay TV currently on Sky Player, which includes the latest blockbuster movies, live action sports, must see entertainment, programming dedicated to kids, music, the arts and thought provoking documentaries.

With Windows 7 it’s easy to find and watch great TV from Sky – all in one place, with a consistent experience, including:

· Search for shows using keywords, browse programme galleries or scroll through the familiar on screen guide

· Touch-enabled interface* for simple panning and gesture navigation

· Works with any Windows Media Center enabled remote control

For existing Sky TV customers, Sky Player on Windows 7 offers another way to view their Sky TV, in addition to their set top box. For non Sky TV customers, Sky Player on Windows 7 offers a wide range of live channels and on demand content via a number of different packages through a monthly subscription.

To celebrate the launch of Sky Player on Windows 7, Sky and Microsoft are offering non Sky TV customers three months of Sky Player for the price of two with any Windows 7 purchase. Customers who already have Windows 7 can subscribe to the offer via the Sky Player sign in page in Windows Media Center.

Windows Media Center is included in Windows 7 Home Premium, Ultimate, Professional and Enterprise.  To watch Sky Player with Windows 7 you need an effective broadband connection of 2Mbit/s or more.

Infrastructure Optimisation (IO): The Foundations of Dynamic IT

Many organisations today realise the value of technology in driving business differentiation. A lot of the time technology is imperative to increase and improve business performance in today's enterprise environments and thus become a true corporate asset that  delivers that business value. CIO's require their IT infrastructure to help advance rather than impede the business. These business needs bring greater pressure and ever increasing demands on IT departments to deliver technically enhanced infrastructures.

The vision of infrastructure optimisation and Dynamic IT  is to help customers realise the value in their IT infrastructure investments and to make the IT infrastructures a strategic asset by reducing cost and increasing agility within their organisations.

A great IO success story was, when in  2005 The City of Edinburgh Council in partnership with their outsource partner BT used the IO model to embark on a service led engagement to deliver their Smart City vision. The vision will enable the council to make a total saving of approximately £6.4 million over 5 years whilst optimising the IT infrastructure to drive improved application performance and business resilience, achieve more effective partnerships with partners and implement an environment that will enable all citizens to engage more easily with the council.

As Doug Barney, editor in chief of Redmondmagazine and the VP, editorial director of Redmond Media Group says in his article 'Infrastructure Optimization for IT';

IO is always a topic that gets addressed when I talk to organisations about deploying Windows Vista. By introducing a modularised, HAL independent OS, a new file based, non destructive imaging format (WIM) and a new servicing stack, Windows Vista enables organisations to simplify image management and reduce the number of images that need to be maintained. This, in conjunction with using the new deployment tools like the Automated Installation Kit (AIK) and the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, can help organisations move along the Core IO model in Desktop, Device and Server Management by reducing manual complexity and increasing optimised automation. Windows 7 will become…

Windows 7 has been the codename for the next release of Windows for some time now and today the Windows team have been pleased to announce the official name for the next version will be… Windows 7. The guys over at Windows Vista Blog state;

“The decision to use the name Windows 7 is about simplicity. Over the years, we have taken different approaches to naming Windows.  We've used version numbers like Windows 3.11, or dates like Windows 98, or "aspirational" monikers like Windows XP or Windows Vista.  And since we do not ship new versions of Windows every year, using a date did not make sense.  Likewise, coming up with an all-new "aspirational" name does not do justice to what we are trying to achieve, which is to stay firmly rooted in our aspirations for Windows Vista, while evolving and refining the substantial investments in platform technology in Windows Vista into the next generation of Windows.

Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore "Windows 7" just makes sense.”

As Louis Walsh says, I like it. It is simple, to the point, we don’t have to keep thinking of elaborate names and after months of calling it Windows 7 I won’t have to remember calling it anything different. It took me a while to get used to Vista from Longhorn client. And though I’m sure this will attract the usual tirade of disgruntled anti Windows pundits, on the whole early feedback has been very positive and welcomed. Oh well, here’s to Windows 7!

England Wins The World Cup!!

Well, the UK that is. If only the English football team could follow suite! The annual World Cup Demo Competition is an internal demo contest that pits Microsoft employees against one another to see who can deliver the best presentation and demonstration of Microsoft technologies and solutions to become World Cup winners. This years business category pitted our very own Victoria Yates & Rachna Patel, Unified Communications Specialists in the STU, against some of Microsoft’s best UC & Exchange specialists from around the world. It was a hard fought contest but after making it all the way to the final, and with an outstanding demo of our Unified Communications technologies including Exchange 2007 and Office Communicator 2007, Victoria & Rachna shone to take the title of World Cup Winners.

Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2008 Releases New Update

We are pleased to announce the release of our first update to Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2008  (MDT 2008).  We have added two major features:  OEM preload scenarios for Lite Touch Installation and Zero Touch Installation with System Center Configuration Manager 2007 and a new management pack for System Center Operations Manager 2007 SP1.  Minor updates include bug fixes and design changes to override driver platforms as well as the ability to inject all drivers into Windows PE. 

MDT 2008 has been extremely well received since its initial launch and boasts over a quarter million downloads of its toolkit and documentation.

Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 is ALIVE!!

Earlier today the long awaited Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 went live on the Microsoft Download Center. Get it here. The guys over at the Windows Home Server Team Blog have more info but here’s a brief clip of the new functionality which includes:

iPhone Hilarity

Many thanks to Jason Langridge for spotting this one, once I'd stopped creasing up with laughter I thought I had to share it.

Especially as I am loving my shiny new HTC Touch Cruise, which, along with a 3MP camera, GPS and Windows Mobile 6, is one of the best Windows powered devices I’ve ever had the pleasure to use. Who needs an iPhone!
