You're absolutely right, this was personally identifiable information but it outside the scope of the DPA (there are law enforcement and journalism exemptions in the DPA as well). The way someone else died is not information about you, but if they are related to you it affects you. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Legally the police did nothing wrong: the investigation will answer questions of ethics and good conduct. Perhaps if the police had spoken to the dead mans father they would have told the journalists that most of the family didn't have the details and would they please keep it that way. &lt;/p&gt;
