There's enough bandwidth available on wireless for most purposes, but for large downloads and software installations wired is greatly preferable.
On a somewhat related note, somebody asked me this week if there was anything they could do to restrict a laptop from doing the normal chatter with the domain while they're on an expensive (satellite modem) link. They said that on a short field trip they'd quickly got up to 50 quid's worth of DNS lookups alone, which weren't especially necessary. Is there anything that you can suggest to help keep costs down?

re: Network adapter priority in Vista

Hi James, On a vaguely related note, I was asked this week how a colleague working temporarily on an expensive (satellite modem) link can reduce the normal domain "chatter" to keep costs down? They said that on their last field trip, they quickly built up 50 quid's worth of DNS lookups alone, which weren't necessary to what they were doing with the machine. Is the best answer to leave the domain on such trips?

Network Adapter Proritisation on Vista « Mashup of Mayhem

PingBack from http://blog.commsconsulting.co.uk/2007/04/05/network-adapter-proritisation-on-vista/

As for the chatter it depends what services you're using, leaving the domain is a very blunt instrument but will work. I know someone who might write something more detailed for the industry insiders blog.
