1: An F1 car is quick.

In contrast, my current OS is far more like your road car or dare I say even a pedestrian sporting an expensive, flashy but v. unnessecery semi-transparent shell suit!

re: Progress or Luddism … why Windows 7 isn’t an F1 car

Thomas it depends. I'm I finding vista Slow ? No. It's plenty fast enough, so is my road car. If you have hardware which isn't up to the job of running vista then 7 might turn out to be a pleasant surprise.

A stripped down built for speed car doesn't do all the things I want. To date the only OS that does the things I want has been Vista, so my only choice has been Vista at the speed it runs (OK for me, not for everyone). 7 does only a little more than Vista but the general view seems to be it does it better AND faster - the worse the hardware the more noticable the improvement. So an OS built purely for speed, no thanks.
