While they are not in the identity of the puppeteer, they are usually in their own (Punch, Kermit, Sooty et al). It could be argued that a sock puppet is far less identifiable, and besides, a glove puppet sounds like itbelongs on a hand, whereas a sock does not.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Would an MS puppet have to be a friendly purple dinosaur?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;PS: You might rethink the title of this post (or perhaps not as you seem to enjoy irony).&lt;/p&gt;
