Just a bit of education on Robert Fripp. He was one of the founder and guitarist of a group called King Crimson which you may have heard of. Of all choices of musicians to use to make the Vista sounds this was by far the best choice. look him up on Wikipedia for an idea on who this guy is, you cannot help but be impressed at his background.

Two things make this an obvious joke:

1. These sounds do not present a "consistent user experience", so the MS designers would never sign off.

2. The selfish and obstructionist nature of copyright law means any collection like this would be prohibitively expensive, even for one of the richest companies in the world, particularly since .WAV files do not provide any copy-blocking mechanism.

the startup sound in vista is at best a flushing toilet, since thats the sound of your money going down the drain into Bills wallett as you fork over $299 for the Ultimate Vista experience.

Vista, which is at best a poor copy of OS X, is more like old Windows XP with a new shower curtain for the toilet and bath ensemble PC you own. Maybe try adding some neon lights in pink or yellow with fish and a fuzzy rug to further improve the BO that MSFT is giving off. But, flush twice, its a long way to MSFT Redmond offices.

Robert Fripp is - somewhat bizarrely - a 'tone-deaf' guitarist who is most notable for having played searing guitar from a seated position.

The major periods in Fripp's career can be summed as follows: -

1969-1974: Founded and ran King Crimson I-IV, from the original Fripp/Lake/MacDonald (In The Court Of The Crimson King) version through to the final Fripp/Wetton/Bruford/Cross (Red) version. During the recording of Red, Fripp appears to have suffered a mental breakdown of some sort, which he says "blew the top of my ******ing head off".

The true anorak will be aware that Bryan Ferry auditioned as a vocalist for KC in 1972, which ultimately led to Roxy Music being signed by KC's record company (EG Records) and RM's first album was produced by Pete Sinfield who was KC's non-performing lyricist. Sinfield later went on to write lyrics for Celine Dion.

Between 1974 and late 1976, Fripp rested and recuperated including becoming a follower of the teachings of one J.G. Bennett.

Fripp then receives a phone call from his label-mate, one Brian Eno (who recorded the Windows 95 start-up sound) who is in Berlin working with David Bowie on the album 'Heroes'.

Despite not having picked up a guitar in anger for around two years, Fripp's initial contribution is the trademark guitar work on 'Heroes'' eponymous title track. He stays on in Berlin for several days, recording contributions to most of the album including "Beauty And The Beast", "Joe The Lion" and "Blackout". He returns to work with Bowie some four years later, contributing guitar to several tracks for "Scary Monsters" including the licks on "Fashion" where it sounds like a guitar is being tortured for information - his work on this album takes a whole two days.

After 'Heroes', Fripp moved to New York for several years contributing guitar to Blondie (Fade Away And Radiate - Parallel Lines) and Talking Heads (I Zimbra - Fear Of Music). During this period, he produced albums for Daryl Hall (Sacred Songs), Peter Gabriel (II or Scratch, depending on your preference), The Roches and Peter Hamill (formerly of Van De Graff Generator). Fripp also contributed guitar to Peter Gabriel I (Solsbury Hill, if I recall) and PG III (Games Without Frontiers).

You should check Fripp's avant-garde work with looping technology: personally I prefer his earlier 'analog' material which can be heard on Let The Power Fall when he was using his gorgeous Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty (1958, if memory serves) in conjunction with two Revox reel-to-reel units, however the new material - which relies on digital delay systems - is richer and in many ways more relaxing.

I can bore on the "product" of EG Management and EG Records for many weeks, which is why I don't get invited to dinner parties.

Hey Darcey, i noticed you tried to stir up a debate by mentioning MAC users twice with what was essentially the same post just worded differently.

All ive got to say is, rather than stir up trouble just respect someones choice to use a MAC or even an AMIGA in some cases like me, over using Windows. We all know what is best for us from our previous experience with other Operating systems, and it wrong to suspect otherwise.

The sounds are, shall I say, pretty...umm...unusual, given what Windows Vista appears to be getting at. I would imagine that the Vista sounds should sound even more soothing than the Windows XP Default sound scheme. After hearing the audio clip, I am quite chagrined that an OS like Windows will ever have to use weird sounds like these. It seems like a harbinger for future Windows sound schemes.
