ALL attempts to create Back-UP files on Drive "E"

(using DVD+R) have failed ! The back-up appears to complete but ends in an error message sector error

code (0x8007001B).  I have tried with Windows DVD Maker, etc, etc., with the same results.

I also got following errors from Windows DVD Maker    error   7.0.6000.16473  

I have run chkdk C: /F /R  and defrag, etc. - no problems detected.  The restor point function works just fine on the C Disk, but all attempts to use Back-Ups has failed.

Problem with a new HP Pavilion dv6235nr running Vista Home Prem.  Error (0x8007001B)

In my case the "problem" was twofold:

1) The recovery partition "D" on the main "C" Drive filled up with attempted Vista Back-ups!

2) The Vita Backup Files were large (about 5+ GB), hence will not fit on a DVD+R Disk !

My work-around was as follows:

1) Delete ALL of the unwanted backup file on "D" EXCEPT the Recovery folder which was put their by the manufacture (HP in my case).  These are typically D:\<PC Name>\Backup Set<Date and Time>\Backup Files\Backup files.zip  These are in the Catalog and Backup Set folders.  Use Windows Explorer set to view full path and file extensions to delete these files.  This takes some time and effort because the Recycle Bin on "D" must be empted several times.  Keep deleting until the only thing on "D" is the manufacture RECOVERY Folder, empty Recycle Bin, and an empty INI folder.  The "D" drive should now contain only about 500 Mb.

2) Open Visa Back-UP and set the Back-Up Drive to the "D" Drive.  Set the Back-Up files which you need to back-up (e.g. Documents, etc.)  Caution if you have Picture, or a large amount of other data (>2 Gb) DO NOT include in this back-up; else it will be > 4 Gb !!!

bacause the Back-up system adds about 2Gb of "System" data !!!

Perform the Back-Up.  The Back-up files will be written to the "D" drive

3) close up everything and take a look at "D"   It should contain your back-up files, which

in my case, were about 3 Gb.  

4) Select all of the files on "D" EXCEPT the Manufacture's Recovery Folder, and "burn"

these Back-up file to a DVD drive using software included in Vista.

5) Check to see that they ALL exist on you DVD !  If so, go back and delete ALL of these files from you "D" drive in preparation for the next back-up you wish to perform.

I hope that this solves Error (08007001B).  Best of luck and regards.

I would be interested if their are better work arounds for the Vita Back- Up problems ? Will Microsoft help ?  Short of adding an external storage device (Disk and/or CD Burner) how does Via Back-up store large files (> 10 to 20 GB) ???  The need is to "burn" across multilpe DVDs (e.g. 2 to 6) !!!

In my latest attempt to instigate "Back up files" from the Backup and Restore Center, this is what happened: I used a fresh DVD and started it. It ran for at least three hours, alternately copying files and writing them to the DVD (the DVD drive spinning up and down regularly to receive the files). During this time, green bar in the progress window never got further than about 40% of the distance. And after all this, an error message appeared:

"The backup did not complete successfully"

"An error occurred. The following information might help you resolve the error:"

"The system cannot find the path specified. (0x80070003)"

The size of the files on this DVD was approximately 2.25 GB, a lot less than what I added up from the 12 CD's that I put the first Backup attempt on last week (12 * .70GB = about 8.4 GB. This is frustrating trying to use an advertised feature of Vista and it does not seem to work properly.

Any thoughts on why the Backup failed with that error? Thanks.

Yes, i agree with all the above postings!

It is VERY frustrating that the Vista BackUp/Restore function DOES NOT work!  Apparently, it does not work on various manufactures machines and/or for large  amounts of data (>4 GB) which require multiple burns  of DVDs. Does it even work properly with an external large disk or flash drive ?  I have not seen any comments on the latter?  Please respond.

I changed directions a little on this problem today. I bought a modestly sized (160 GB) external hard drive and did my Vista Backup to this drive. It went very fast compared to the DVDRW and completed successfully with approx 7.9 GB stored. I feel this is progress for me with at least one successful Vista Backup. I will see how this goes in the future.

I would like to use the Complete PC Backup feature to back up a dual boot system (Vista and XP). However it is not clear if the Complete PC Backup does a complete sector based copy of the entire disk, or just the Vista Partition.

Can you please clarify exactly what happens when backing up the "Complete PC".

I am doing regular automatic backups now to my (new) 160 GB external hard drive, which I consider to have been a good investment for just $60. It beats fooling with DVD's.

I have a WD Net Centre (NAS) and have tried to backup around 40gb worth of data.  This has frozen half way through every time with no error msg displayed.  

I recently purchased an HP pavillion a6040n desktop with vista home premium. When I used the file back up on the hp total care advisor using a DVD-RW I got this error message:

I/O dvice error 0X8007045D

short of using my recovery disks to reinstall all the software, can you suggest what to do?

Do I need to use an external hard drive instead, will that even work?

I have the same problem as most people on this page. I have an HP Pavillion Dv6000.The backup starts just fine, backing up a bunch of stuff that I would not want backup, but then after seemingly writing to a portion of the DVD I get the same error code-"An error occurred...the drive cannot find the sector requested. 0x8007001B". I have tried only backing up a small portion of my files and still the same.

I have HP Media Center m7780n with Windows Vista Home Premium. Few days ago, the DVDs stopped playing in the DVD drive. After several hours with HP support, the only option was to restore the system to its factory setting. I reintalled the Windows drive and now want to restore files from the backup.  I back up my files every Saturday. Now, I am trying to restore the files using the advanced option. When I select backup made on another computer and select the drive, I get the error "There ia problem with the backup catalog. Restore from a different backup or create a new full backup.(0X810000E5. Is there a way to repair the catalog. There is only one file in the catalog folder titled Global Catalogs from 7/28.

My last backup was on 7/28 and before that on 7/21. I can see the compressed backup folders but I am not sure which file is in which folder. I have 75 compressed folders and would like to avoid restoring the files manually.

How do I make it so the backup skips certain folders? It backed up Dell Games and other stuff that I don't need backed up, and I can't find any solution.

I haven't found a way to catch the error when it occurs on WindowsBackUp. (yes, errors occur :)

All i found was the directory :

c:\windows\logs\windowsbackup

the log there is encrypted? anyway reading it? does it write there the error number?

anyway, is there a way to catch the error window? or number?

I am having trouble to get Vista Ultimate to backup. The backup applet which allows me to select where to backup to does not start, and it gives an internal generic error (80080005). The backup log contains only something like GUID=dbd33fcd-cfba-5174-7b1a-a59ff2eef057 (No Format Information found). No error log, just informational. The backup does work right after I install ultimate and maybe office. I only have Acrobat Reader and McAfee installed. I even reinstalled Vista, but after a while, the backup problem shows up. Any one can point me to a solution?

Same problem here - Sony Vaio SZ430N. Backup appears to run properly and then at the end says "The drive cannot find the sector requested 0x8007001B" I'm going to try with an external drive tonight.

I tried burning both partitions of my HD straight to a freshly formatted DVD in one go & got the "The drive cannot find the sector requested 0x8007001B".

James' advice to save one partition's backup to another and then burn both to DVD works nicely. Might be worth keeping them on seperate DVDs to keep restoration confusion by the laptop to a minimum!

I have a NAS drive with 400g of storage.  I have been unable to back up to it.  When I go to set up the backup I get a message that says: "the RPC server is unavailable" 0x800706BA.  I can access the drive fine normally but back up to it doesn't seem to work.  Any ideas?

I've been trying to bakc up using Vista on HP dv9210us Notebook uing the back-up feature in "HP Total Care" to a DVD in drive E.

At first I had Documents, Pictures and Email marked for back-up. I got a back up error: The drive cannot find the sector requested (0x8007001B.

I then backed up just the documents and photos & the backup was sucessful.

Then I tried backing up just the emails & got the error message again. Does this mean that Vista cannot do a automated back-up of emails?

I'm now going to try a back-up on and external HD and see if that works. I'll let you know.

Okay, I used  "HP Total Care" and backed up to an external "Maxtor" (drive F). No problem - backup is successful. Apparently, it does not like to back up on CD/DVD.

tried to bu again and it asked for the bad disk and refused to start clean, i stoppped the program and rebooted. and it demanded the bad disk again so i put it in it proceeded to burn a disk then ask for a new disk but would not open the drive,not w/ drive button ither, so i opened explorer and clicked on eject it worked, it burned 6 more disks then gave me the same error, i will have no confidance in any of this result and can not even start a new BU as it insists on doing a cerial based on the original bad bu. need an option to do a new complete BU! Please fix this ASAP

I ordered a brand Inspiron 6400 Laptop from Dell with VISTA ULTIMATE, 2GB Ram, DVD + R/W and received it about May 20,2007. After loading up some new app's and setup all the preferences I wanted. Then I tried to do FULL SYSTEM BACK-UP. The Backup program says it needs to Format my Sony DVD-R and runs for a few minutes then

it gets an I/O Dev error 0x8007045D. I've been in Chat with Dell Tech's and so far I have made 4 DVD Coasters

When I looked on the Net several other folks were having the same problem. Is there a fix??

(0x8007001B)" (I'm burning to a DVD+R) Documents, pictures and videos burn without problems, but it's impossible to achieve a full backup. From what I've understood, this is mostly a HP-related problem, though not always - perhaps James could contact HP and then they could both look for a solution to the problem. Just a tip. Executing "complete PC Backup" i receive error code within 2 minutes of selecting option.

When trying to do a backup or burn a cd-rw or dvd-rw I get a message saying the disc needs to be formatted and then it says the format failed because the disc is write protected. I cannot use the live file system to work,  only the mastered format works.  I am using the same package of dvd-rw and cd-rw that I used in the past,  I've used live file system successfully in the past . I have a HP pavilion s3020n, vista home premium. Do youhave any idea why it's telling me the  discs are write protected?

Like many others, I get the 0x8007001B error on my Toshiba A200, writing to a duallayer DVD+R 8.5GB.

I also would like to be able to nominate which folders can be excluded.  I have many GB of maps that don't get updated.

Are you kidding me? How hard is it to backup some 0's and 1's? I'm an IT professional and I can't believe this OS got off the production line. Nothing works properly or as advertised in this OS without some issue, registry hack, or workaround! Yes, I have brand new hardware (ASUS, NVIDIA, CORSAIR, Q6600, WD Raptors) with latest drivers and service packs. I have tried both 32 bit and 64 bit Ultimate Vistas. BOTH FAIL. XP 32 bit works on the same hardware. BOTH VISTAS HAVE A LONG LIST OF OTHER BUGS.

What a joke. I really gave this OS a chance. I simply cannot continue here as I'm doing more searching online for fixes and tweaks to make this OS work than actually doing real work. Sad.

AMD Turion 62 x 2

256MB ATI Radeon Xpress

120GB HDD

DVD Multi double layer

2GB RAM

However before I even able to backup files to DVD, my DVD isn't working. I search many articles it said Vista driver is not compatible wih this DVD Pioneer DVR-K17RS ATA device

I can read and write on CD without any issue, and only this DVD read and write got issue.

I have a Sony Vaio (VGN-N365E) and i have not had it for longer than 2 months.  i'm trying to backup my files but i get this message 10 minutes after inserting the first blank DVD+R.

I receive the following error message when I try to back up my Vista laptop to a share called 'Backup' on my Windows 2003 server:

the network share could not be accessed for the following reasons: incorrect function 0x80070001.

When trying to set up the backup I get a username/password prompt when I select the network location, but no matter what I put in it always fails with this message, and event logs don't give any clues.

I use a Netgear SC101 attached to my network via a Cisco 2950 24 port switch, and the Netgear software is installed on my server. Drivers on the server and firmware on the SC101 are all up to date.

To all intents and purposes the drive is local to my server and appears in My computer on the server as local (E:), and all shares on this drive are accessible through my Vista laptop (Dell Inspiron 1501, 80GB SATA, 2GB Ram, Vista Ultimate. Partitions are Dell standard, OS partition shows active).

I just can't back up to a network location. Backups to an 80GB unbranded external USB device are ok.

Clearly there is a problem here that is not limited to DVD/CD backups, and I'd like to be able to backup without having a usb drive dangling off the back of my PC.

I've just bought a HP Pavilion notebook - my problem is that I've been trying to view files made on my old Win XP laptop - Vista doesn't seem to want to recognise these files or CD but it means that I won't be able to view any of my old data CD's made on WinXP.  

Is there any way round this? - I hope I'm just missing something.

I have been able to make backups on my HP Pavilion with the Vista operating system, but now they start, then go to a red line and I get the message that it did not complete and get the error message ox8007001B.  The drive cannot find the sector requested.  What do I do now?

I have a brand new Gateway machine with Vista.  I can manually do a Windows backup to a USB connected hard drive.  When I set the backup to run automatically at 1 AM every night, I get an error message the next morning that drive was not found.   I have set the computer so it doesn't sleep.  Why can't the program find the drive when set to automatic backup?

I have one of the problems mentioned above. I own a HP Pavilion Elite m9050 and while backing-up to a DVD-R got the error message: the parameter is incorrect (0x80070057). There isn't a solution for this problem yet, is there? And why didn't James post anything since October?

well im having the same problem here as my new gateway mt-3705 notebook started backing u files and putting them onto the hard drive dics- after so few downloads it came back saying i had low disc spae and so fortunately i had some disc laying around but the cd-v rom would not recognize them and said the were invalid. i called gateway about this and was told that vista works best with memorex and tdk discs so i went out and spent more money on top of  the other money to  buy discs only to have the same problem- although i did get these files loaded onto a office depot cd-r disc- i only had 2 and it was  asking for a 3rd disc of which i didnt have - so i went to office depot and spent more money only to find agin the c-dvd  rom would not recognize  the disc-

I have an HP mediacenter (M8100N) and i continue to lose fights on backup.  i have read through the above and i get the impression i'm not alone.  i've tried backups to dvd's and to an external harddrive via USB and i can't seem to get either to work.  i've read about wiping out shadow copies but not familiar with this so i'll want to do a little more digging before i go that step.

In February 2007 I purchased an HP Pavilion S7710 with Windows Home Premium.   I also have had several DVD+RW discs corrupted with an error message of 0x8007045D 1/0 device error.  Luckily I also did back-up via USB onto floppy disks - which haven't failed me yet!

Is anyone investigating this problem?  The device on the HP is by TSST Corp CD/DVDW TS-H652m ATA device.  I am not a computer buff so I don't know if it is relevant but whilst working on a document in the hard drive or on the floppy disk the computer appears to be reading the DVD drive at the same time.

I have the same problem... I have a DELL XPS 420 with a Maxtor 250GB ext hard

drive... I did a 'Complete PC Backup' to B: drive (The ext Maxtor)

Next, I rebooted and used the system repair from the boot menu... this

formated my hard drive and set everything back to the DELL factory

defaults... re-installing Windows Vista Ultimate, Office 2K7, and all the

other DELL junk...

Now, I'd like to restore the computer to before the DELL repair... the files

are all still on the B: drive, I can see them there...

However, when I go to 'Restore files' -> 'Advanced restore' -> 'Warning -

Continue' -> only the 'Files from a backup made on a different computer.' is

enabled and already has a tick in the radio button -> 'Next' -> 'Looking for

backup devices...' -> I select B: drive -> and it tells me "Windows cannot

find any backup sets on the selected device"

I would really like to have my files back... any help would be greatly appreciated...

I have a Dell with Vista Ultimate.  I want to to do auotmatic nightly backup.  So I set a up daily backup of all files in Vista.  But after about 3 days if starts to fail.  Message seems to suggest a space issue.  This is a new laptop with very little data on it.  I don't understand how if it backed up on day 1 (full backup) it can then report space problems on subsequent days? After all it is not creating an archive of changes.  What am I doing wrong, noone seems to be able to anwer this.  It is affecting many of my friends too!?

I successfully backuped up Vista business to a WD Passport USB HD. I now have it connected and Vista Complete PC Backup locks up while searching for backup devices-the progress bar keeps painting, but nothing happens. I can explore to the drive just fine. Help!

I am glad I found this thread because I havejust had an occurrence that is getting to me.

I have Vista Ultimate running 64 Bit and have suddenly learned that I cannot restore my backup set when moving up to SP1.  I have done it several times in the past as I commonly review ssds and have a very popular Vista tweaking thread on notebookreview.com

I can make a complete pc backup set with no problem.  On trying to restore it to another ssd (which I have done several times), it will not let me and this is the response I get:

Error Detail: Failed to retrieve properties from backup set because backup set is not in the catalog (0x80780003).

I just got a second sata HD and installed it in my Vista Sp1 machine running live one care. It recognized the second HD as a backup device in the setup menu and performed a backup. Later I tried to set up backups on a schedule and the HD had disappeared from the menu. It was still working ,it was assigned a drive letter ,it just was not a recognized backup device. I tried to get a sata cable that would reach from the HD in the computer ,out the back and into the Esata port. Rats ..... it didn't work because both ends of the Esata cords are different than standard sata HD connections.  My next attempt will be to assign a network path to the HD I want to use for backup within the same machine but I am getting in a little over my head.   Why not put in   (Local disk properties, properties, change settings) a button to cause a second HD to be recognized as a backup device.

So my Backup has been running just fine, but now my backup drive is full and backups are failing. I can't find any way in the braindead Backup UI to set retention policies or a way to have older backups removed.

I only have one Backup Set on the drive dated 2007-12-03. So I guess that's one full backup and incrementals since then?

How can I get my backups going again? Do I have to delete the entire Backup Set? Can I delete part of the backup set?

I have an inspiron 1420, Vista Business edition. I am trying to backup to my external WD Passport HD. I get the following message:

The backup disk has a corrupted file system. Fix it using the disk error checking tool, or choose a different backup location. (0x81000008)

This is a 160GB HD. I do have some files on there. Deleted others, defragged it. Etc. Do I need to move the files off of this drive?

My first backup to a DVD went smoothly back in February 2008.  WhenI tried to do an incremental backup later on the same DVD, it failed.  I then did a successful full backup to an external hard drive in April 2008.  However, when I tried to do another full backup to a DVD, the backup failed with the message "Backup did not complete due to an error.  Incorrect function (0x80070001)".  I have an HP Pavilion a6130n with Windows Vista Home Premium, which I purchased in July 2007. All updates are current.  It seems like users are having major trouble getting Vista Backup to work.  I also couldn't find any info on this error at the Microsoft site.

I am using Vista Ultimate Backup. It has a problem of backing up many GB of files that have not been touched in years. For example, I did a complete backup of 280GB two nights ago. Then last night Backup ran at 3 AM and somehow found another 40 GB of files to add to the USB backup disc. This happens often. I inspected the 40 GB files and they are  from 2007 and have not been modified in any way recently. Yes I am running the Vista search query indexer but no anti virus or other file checker.

On another Vista computer the BU problem is different. It backs up huge email (outlook) archive files often even though only a few emails have been added to it. Is BAckup really that clueless? I have spent many hours with these problems -- please help me do a backup with only the files that have CHANGED.  Thanks  Al

This my second attempt to leave a comment. The first never was published. Bottom line is that Vista Backup is backing up files that have not been changed for years. I did a complete fresh BU for 280 GB (lots of photos). The following day another 40 GB was backed up automatically at 3 AM -- these files have not been changed in years! This is a common problem for me and my ext USB drive fills up fast. I dont have virus checkers running. HELP.

Hello,

I believe the problem lies in large files, such as ripped DVDs etc.  The more large files you have, the less Backup is able to split them up.  It therefore cannot find the sector (0x8007001B) because it doesn't exist - it needs a new disk and hasn't recognized that fact.

Here's my work around:  Go to Search --> Backup and Restore Center --> Change Settings --> Change Backup Settings.  Uncheck, in the types of files to be backed up, <i>videos</i>, <i>TV shows</i>, and <i>Music</i>, in that order.  Vids are usually bigger than TV shows are usually bigger than MP3s.

Run the backup now.  It should work.  After backup has completed, backup your vids and such if you wish, manually.

By the way, I'm running a Toshiba A205 with 1gig RAM, 2gHz Centrino Duo, and Windows Vista Home Premium.  The problem only cropped up recently after I ripped a few personally owned DVDs for playback on the go.

Solved the 0x8007001B problem.  I have a Toshiba laptop I was backing up weakly with no problems.  I ran out of DVD's and started having a problems.  Backups would not run completely.  I searched the internet and found no answer, just other folks with problems.  What I did is go back and look at my old backups that worked.  What I noticed is that the backup DVD's that worked were DVD-R.  The DVD's that didn't work were DVD+R.  I went and bought some DVD-R's and viola!  That did the trick for me.

I am trying to back up 20GB of data using Windows Vista to a brand new 160G WD External drive. I have tested the external harddrive using Vista and it has given the all clear.

The back up fails every time I try it. The error message states: "the back up disk has a corrupted file system. Fix it using the disk checking error tool". When checked npow probelems are found. The error message is 0x81000008....can you help??

I just went to get me a WD 250GB USB HD to backup my files on my ACER Aspire 5100 Vista and like many others out there got the message:

"the backup target drive F: failed with the following error: The backup disk has a corrupted file system. Fix it using the disk error checking tool or choose a different location. (0x81000008).

In other forums they say that "My hard disk is NTFS and my external drive is FAT32"and hence the answer to this problem is to format the external HD and turn it into NTFS - but you run the risk of loosing data... Some say that the formating works just fine.

But... I have yet to find instructions on how to carry out this 'formating' - let alone not loose data. Could someone Help out with this? I really don't want to format my WD HD because it came with some internal files that I feel if they are erased might not allow the drive to work properly!

Can someone explain NTFS?

I have HP Pavilion Elite m9252p PC running under Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit with Service Pack 1.  I need to access data in Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus external drive.  However, the HP PC does not recognize the drive.

Maxtor (Seagate) technical support people told me that it does not have 64-bit driver.  They suggest to connect the Maxtor drive to another Windows XP PC and get the data through a network sharing method.  I might have to do it.

However, I am wondering if you could suggest alternative solution for this data access problem.  Any helpful suggestons would be appreciated.

I read many questions, but no answers, to the same problem I have. My D drive is FULL due to backups. Currently I believed that only my antivirus program was backing up files, but now I think Vista also is. HOW DO I DELETE OLD FILES??  It can't possibly be that difficult, but I can't find the option.

my d drive is almost full. it crashed my photoshop cs3 and i cant complete the wedding i was working on. have tried for over 12 hours to copy and do a back up on dvd and cds and they all fail. i have taken most of the files off the computer and if i didnt have so many pics i still need to work on this would be in the street.....road kill.  at first i trusted the damn thing to do its thing on the backup file... go do something else come back and it failed. then i SAT.... HERE FOR ABOUT 6 hours downloading discs. and the same thing. In my world that is a lot of time and money. i hated vista at first.... then after a year ive gotten used to it... seems my first impression was correct.. vista sucks...

also.. it seems from the post ahead of me that they are having the same issues im having at the same time. back up and restore same screens appear. and i also went and purchased an external drive same make... came home worked on my older computer and when i tried to hook it up to the hp vista model it didnt and couldnt read the seagate external drive... guys come back to earth and make one for the regular folks. our brain pans are not as large as yours. vista is like trying to figure out a program as complex as adobe photoshop cs. vista is not intutive. you cannot apply most of the knowledge you reaped by applying the old techniques to the new program and layer that knowledge with the new. no you guys went and redid the whole thing so i had to learn a new program. i just want my new computer to work as well as my older xp model.

then problems occur like these.. it wont read seagate external drive. and the backup fails. i have 5 computers and they are of different ages. and this is the only one where the backup drive shut my progams down and i have been on my older ones for 4 years and not one day of problems of this nature. the brand new one is the problem child... this is hell. what problem will i have next in the middle of a brides wedding album.

i reread your reply to the guy before me post and you sent him to the filecab... again i say. im not a computer programmer. im not a tech geek. im a wedding photographer that uses photoshop.

i didnt even begin to understand half what was on those pages. i want a simple and quick fix for the internal problems of my d drive and external memory without destroying my files that im working on and without having to pay a computer guy 100 bucks an hour to fix what i dont know how to fix or want to understand and from the post ahead of me, seems to be a problem with the design of vista  not my expertise....

I have a dell 1420 that needed to be restored to factory settings. the recovery d drive got trashed but i still had the factory.wim file. Dell support told me there was no way to restore it with out the cds at this point. I did not believe them even after talking to 3 different people and each said the same thing, but the last one as we are going through files i saw a file called ( imagex ) and wanted to do some research on it before i was willing to restore from cd's.

I usae imagex and factory.wim and it worked. Just like it came out of the box......well almost the only thing I'm missing is the recovery files located in the d drive. How do I set them up so it will truly like it came from dell. can i use imagex for this? How does dell create the recovery files?

Les, I know it's a bit late but I have recently had the same problem that you reported here.  This may not be of any use to you at this point, but may to others who could experience the same thing, so I thought I'd post a response.  

The problem that I experienced was with the Restore process built into Windows Vista 64 Ultimate.  The error was the one mentioned above.

Basically, I wanted to be able to roll back to any backup that I may have taken.  Given that the backup process puts subsequent backups in the same directory and just records the different, I decided to take a copy of the backup folder each time I did a backup.  That way, if I wanted to roll back to a specific backup, I could do it.  Or so I thought...

However, what I learnt was that even though I copied and renamed the previous backup folders as different names e.g. computer name + date, if there was more than one backup folder for the pc under the WindowsImageBackup folder, then when I tried to do a Complete PC restore, it would get the error mentioned above when I selected the most recent backup and sometimes would report certain backups, but not others.  

So the resolution was quite simple, to remove all the additional backup folders other than the main one for the PC and put them in another directory elsewhere on the drive, or another drive.

Hope this help if anyone else gets this probem.

I have had nothing but trouble using the Vista Home Premium with my new HP computer. The CD-ROM device is supposed to be a DVDRRW device as well. I cannot get any DVD type disk to read or write. I went through the online chat with HP support, and they steered me into a dead end. I finally got them to send me a new CD-ROM DVDRRW player as a replacement. I believe the device is flawed and the software is corrupt. The cdfs.sys file says that it is disabled. If this is the problem, how do you fix it?

I have Vista Ultimate.  I noticed that file restore file pick dialog from the most recent file backup mixed up folders from earlier backups.  I also noticed that sorting by "date changed" (or any column other than filename) did not work.  Deleted the backup set from the drive and tried a fresh clean full backup.  The program indicated a successful backup.  Thought I check restore though..  I was greeted with error 0x810000EC and advised to open the backup set from an admin account.  (I'm IN an admin account. )  The backup program didn't check this and gave the user a false sense of security about his backup!!! I am thoroughly disgusted with Vista Backup.  It is BADLY DESIGNED, and the bad design is POORLY EXECUTED.  This is a management problem, not a technical problem.  You guys should be ashamed of yourselves.

My TSST Corp CD/DVDW TS-L632D ATA Device is disabled.  It says it is a code 10.  Any advice as to how to fix this problem?  

This thread has been going on for almost TWO YEARS with people having the same problem.  James is going to "let them know"...hey James, maybe it's time to walk over and find out what they know and how many more YEARS this problem is going to go on before those who you "let know" actually get around to figuring out WHY this problem is happening and WHEN they think that they're going to get around to fixing it.

I would THINK that a problem that involves the inability to backup and restore data that is impacting this many people (google it, James, see how many people are having this problem other than the ones who happened across this post) would be a HIGH PRIORITY ITEM.

Please post the email address of the product manager for this program, apparently he needs to hear directly from the customers whose satisfactions is supposedly important to him/her.

I've been trying to back up files off and on for over a year now.  I get the exact SAME error message!  "The drive cannot find the sector requested. (0x8007001B)"  I have 6.2G of "stuff" that Windows thinks I need to back up, but when I deselect pictures, music, etc.  it still says I have 6.2G of "stuff" that needs to be backed up.  I've tried DVD's and CD-ROM's, but NORTON 360 was the only thing that backed up some of my "stuff."  (More like music and pictures; which are already backed up!)  I'm so sick of this!!  Could someone PLEASE get around to fixing this 2+ year-long problem?!  BTW, I have an HP Pavilion dv6000 with SHITSTA . . .  I mean VISTA . . . Home Premium, if that makes any difference at all.

I have been backing up my Dell Dimension E520 to an external hard drive for about a year, but now have the same sort of error notice as many people here.  I would have thought Microsoft could have found a solution to this problem by now.
