February 2009 Update for Windows Home Server

Today the Windows Home Server team is releasing a small update to the product.  This update improves the process by which the Windows Home Server Connector Software gets updated.  Additionally, this update resolves certain issues that could occur when restoring files and folders from Windows Home Server, such as the opening of a Home Computer Backup stalling at 79% to 81% complete.  The update should be automatically downloaded and installed on your home server over the next several days, if you have Windows Update turned on.

You can check if you have Windows Update turned on, by opening the Windows Home Server Console - Settings - General page.

Just a bit of feedback on WHS:

There's a lawyer that rents a suite from us who is very much pro-mac.  He's had _horrible_ experiences with PCs, especially with Vista, and was just about ready to call it quits on Microsoft for good.  I was helping him with an issue a couple months ago and told him about Windows Home Server.  He seemed mildly interested but mainly took a "I've heard that before - I don't trust it if it says Microsoft on it."  I never heard anything more from him about it until this week - he happened to be passing by my office and said "hey, I wanted to thank you for keying me in on that server thing."  "Windows Home Server?"  "Yeah, I got one."  "How is it?"  "Awesome.  It's amazing - I wouldn't mind if it said Apple on it, but hey, it works."

He's got a couple of PCs backing up to it and his Macs too and can't believe how drop-dead easy to use it is.  He told me that he was telling one of his lawyer friends about it and they only thing they couldn't figure out was why they had never heard of it before.  "The thing is amazing, how come everyone isn't using it?"

Good job, team!

WHS ROCKS! :)

I really want to buy a WHS, but not until it has 2 very important features. First, I need to be able to remote desktop control my mac computer on the home network by logging into WHS, (from another location) just like you can remote desktop control a win computer by logging into WHS (while on a business trip, etc.). Second, I need to be able to log in to WHS from another location (business trip, etc.) and view a web cam(s) live to check on the house security. If they add a way to remote in to my mac connected to the WHS (like you can a win machine), and add the remote webcam live viewing, I'll gladly go out and buy WHS hp server!!!!!!!!!!!

I was really looking forward to this update - sadly the 79 / 81% single file restore bugs remain :(
