Consumer Strategy Microsoft
Virtual Earth redirect with 9MSN

You may have seen that over the weekend a new redirect from www.maps.live.com to the ninemsn mashup at http://maps.ninemsn.com.au has been put in place.

This is a great way to get excellent local business directory mashups with VE.  9MSN's business directory is one of the largest in Australia and now mapping becomes a key value proposition

However if you still want to get access to the awesome features of the VE6.2 platform you can still get access to it through http://maps.live.com/?mkt=en-us

Thanks for the info Harvey...though i'm still a bit confused as to why this was done without any pre-warning going out.

If you read my post about this (http://www.splatt.com.au/blog/2008/10/02/some-nuthead/) you will discover that i had some issues occur because of the forced redirect :(

I understand the logic behind providing a service that ninemsn can create a lot of added value for...but maybe it would have been a good idea to tell peple about it before it happened and also to provide a link on the maps page that allows you to flip between the ninemsn and the US version easily.

Just an idea.

Hi Mike, mate no doubt.  We should have communicated this...hence why I wanted to blog about it asap.

The main reason this is important is because the tighter the integration with business directories and 9MSN in particular will increase platform use and make us higher in priority when getting updates and reach.

thanks again

Harvey
