Note:

If you install SQL Server 2005 SP3, you must use Cumulative update package 3 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=165748).

If you install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1, you must install Cumulative update package 2 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=165962).

When you install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1, you might receive a compatibility warning. You can disregard this warning and continue with your installation.

The Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies 2010 Preparation Tool does not check your Microsoft SQL Server install version before Setup. The SharePoint Product and Technologies Configuration Wizard checks that you have the correct version of SQL Server after you have completed Setup.

Note:

You must download an update for Windows Server 2008 before you run Setup, or Setup will not run.

· For Windows Server 2008 with SP2, see FIX: A hotfix that provides a method to support the token authentication without transport security or message encryption in WCF is available for the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=160770).

· For Windows Server 2008 R2, see FIX: A hotfix that provides a method to support the token authentication without transport security or message encryption in WCF is available for the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=166231).

The Beta version of the Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies 2010 Preparation Tool does not install these updates.

Note:

If you are running Windows Server 2008 with SP1, the Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies 2010 Preparation Tool installs Windows Server 2008 SP2 for you.

Note:

If you plan to use Windows Server 2008 and Windows PowerShell 1.0 is already installed, you must uninstall Windows PowerShell 1.0 before you can successfully install Windows PowerShell 2.0 CTP3.

Note:

You must download the Microsoft Server Speech Platform and the corresponding speech recognition language to make the phonetic name matching work correctly for SharePoint Search 2010. Ensure that you apply these to all servers in the farm.

· Microsoft Server Speech Platform (http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/D/F/8DFE3CE7-6424-4801-90C3-85879DE2B3DE/Platform/x64/SpeechPlatformRuntime.msi)

Select one of the following speech recognition languages:

· Speech recognition language for English (http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/0/3/E033A120-73D0-4629-8AED-A1D728CB6E34/SR/MSSpeech_SR_en-US_TELE.msi)

· Speech recognition language for Spanish (http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/0/3/E033A120-73D0-4629-8AED-A1D728CB6E34/SR/MSSpeech_SR_es-ES_TELE.msi)

· Speech recognition language for German (http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/0/3/E033A120-73D0-4629-8AED-A1D728CB6E34/SR/MSSpeech_SR_de-DE_TELE.msi)

· Speech recognition language for French (http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/0/3/E033A120-73D0-4629-8AED-A1D728CB6E34/SR/MSSpeech_SR_fr-FR_TELE.msi)

· Speech recognition language for Japanese (http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/0/3/E033A120-73D0-4629-8AED-A1D728CB6E34/SR/MSSpeech_SR_ja-JP_TELE.msi)

· Speech recognition language for Chinese (http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/0/3/E033A120-73D0-4629-8AED-A1D728CB6E34/SR/MSSpeech_SR_zh-CN_TELE.msi)

Additionally, you must update the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Speech Server\v10.0\Recognizers\Tokens\SR_MS_<LocalCode>_TELE_10.0\Attributes] registry key for every language that you install. Click Start, and then run regedit. Find the registry key, and then update the Vendor value to Microsoft Corporation.

This registry key change may cause errors for administrators who use Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 or any other products that depend on the speech technology, but it is required for the phonetic matching to work correctly.

The Beta version of the Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies 2010 Preparation Tool does not install these updates.

Note:

If you plan to use Access Services for SharePoint Server 2010, you must install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services Add-in for SharePoint Technologies (SSRS). For more information, see Using Access Services with SQL Reporting Services: Installing SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services Add-In (SharePoint Server 2010).

Installing software prerequisites

To install Windows Server 2008 or Microsoft SQL Server, you can go to the Web sites listed in this section. You can install all other software prerequisites through the SharePoint Server 2010 Start page. Most of the software prerequisites are also available from Web sites listed in this section. The Web Server (IIS) role and the Application Server role can be activated manually in Server Manager.

SharePoint 2010 - A Masterpiece

SharePoint 2010 is The Business Collaboration Platform for the Enterprise & the Web that enables you to connect & empower people through an integrated and rich set of features that can be deployed as Intranet, Extranet or Internet-facing solutions. Whether deployed on-premise or as hosted services, SharePoint 2010 helps you cut costs with a unified infrastructure while allowing you to rapidly respond to your business needs.

SharePoint 2010 helps you to:

  • Connect and empower people by letting them work together in ways that are most effective for them. Whether through the PC, browser or phone, SharePoint 2010 offers an intuitive and familiar user experience and enables people to find the most relevant experts to collaborate with, while providing them with self-service information that significantly enhances their decision-making capabilities.
  • Cut Costs with a unified infrastructure that offers enterprise-scale manageability and availability. Whether deployed on premises or as hosted services, SharePoint 2010 lowers total cost of ownership by offering an integrated set of features.
  • Rapidly respond to business needs with dynamic and easily deployed solutions. Whether it’s an end user or a professional developer, SharePoint 2010 offers the tools and capabilities to design & create business solutions that can be integrated with existing enterprise data, tools and processes.

When considering SharePoint 2010 for enterprise business collaboration solutions, there are six major capability areas to explore:

 SP2010_overview

  1. Sites – The ability to engage employees, partners and customers in en effective manner, both inside and outside the firewall.
  2. Communities – The ability to find and interact with other people within an organization, as well as across multiple organizations, quickly and easily while leveraging both formal and informal networks.
  3. Content – The facilities for the creation, review, publication, review and disposal of content including conforming to defined compliance rules whether the content exists as traditional documents, as spreadsheets or as Web pages. SharePoint 2010's content-management capabilities include document management, records management, and Web content management.
  4. Search – With more content existing online and multiple people collaborating on such content, it's critical people can quickly and easily locate relevant content across SharePoint lists, sites and external systems and sources such as file shares, Web sites or line-of-business applications.
  5. Insights – Business users need the ability to not only rapidly deliver and share information critical to the success of the business but also to turn raw data into actionable results.
  6. Composites – Business users need the ability to quickly create applications without involving the corporate IT group for each request. At the same time, the IT staff needs the capability to empower business users to create these applications while ensuring the environment’s stability and availability.

From a business perspective, SharePoint 2010 solves the need for a centralized solution that can be used in conjunction with existing software and applications.  By leveraging the BCS, SharePoint 2010 can natively connect to existing sources of information.  With the Multi-tenancy feature, organizations have more control with hosted environments (from the hosting side of things as well as the client side).

As an administrator, this release has made drastic improvements toward a solution that is not only manageable, but one that is easy to maintain.  The integration with Windows PowerShell allows for more administrative control, a more efficient command line, and improves productivity.  The new Central Administration interface makes it easier to locate and configure settings for your environment.  SharePoint 2010 has incorporated more performance controls, logging and reporting options, as well as a much desired improvement on the native disaster-recovery options.  The revamped service applications feature ensures greater flexibility with regards to the shared services being used within the environment.

On the Developer Front, whether the challenge that you are trying to solve is a simple one-off application with a few data tables or the front end for an enterprise solution that drives the organization, SharePoint 2010 and the Office 2010 clients provide the tools you need to manage your data, support your users, and connect the processes. As a developer using SharePoint you are not tied to tediously building interactive edit screens, buried in building architecture, or stymied by building security. Building on the benefits of the SharePoint platform allows you to get more done.

Microsoft Unveils SharePoint Server 2010 and Showcases New Functionality

On Oct 19, 2009 at Microsoft Corp.’s SharePoint Conference, Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer announced that the public beta of Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and Microsoft Office 2010 will become available in November, and revealed some of the new SharePoint Server 2010 capabilities for the first time.
“By taming the overflow of information across systems and technologies, SharePoint enables organizations to thrive,” Ballmer said. “SharePoint 2010 is the biggest and most important release of SharePoint to date. When paired with Microsoft Office 2010, SharePoint 2010 will transform efficiency by connecting workers across a single collaboration platform for business.”

SharePoint Server is one of the fastest-growing products in Microsoft’s history, with over $1.3 billion in revenue, representing over a 20 percent growth over the past year. According to IDC, Microsoft attained a significant share of the collaborative content workspace market in 2008, and had the highest growth rate among top vendors with its Microsoft Office SharePoint Server.

During his keynote address, Ballmer talked broadly about SharePoint Server as a business collaboration platform and highlighted three key areas. One was how organizations can respond quickly to business needs with an improved developer platform that makes it easier to build rich content and collaboration applications. Another topic was the enhanced Internet site capabilities that help businesses drive revenue and retain customers on a single platform. The third was the choice and flexibility between on-premises and cloud solutions. At the event, Microsoft showcased the breadth of SharePoint Server 2010 that ranges from wikis to workflows, while Ballmer’s keynote address highlighted features and capabilities such as these:

  • A new ribbon user interface that makes end users more productive and customization of SharePoint sites easy.
  • Deep Office integration through social tagging, backstage integration and document life-cycle management.
  • Built-in support for rich media such as video, audio and Silverlight, making it easy to build dynamic Web sites.
  • New Web content management features with built-in accessibility through Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0, multilingual support and one-click page layout, enabling anyone to access SharePoint Server sites.
  • New SharePoint tools in Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, giving developers a premier experience with the tools they know and trust.
  • Business Connectivity Services, which allow developers to connect capabilities to line-of-business data or Web services in SharePoint Server and the Office client.
  • Rich APIs and support for Silverlight, representational state transfer (REST) and Language-Integrated Query (LINQ), to help developers rapidly build applications on the SharePoint platform .
  • Enterprise features in SharePoint Online such as Excel Services and InfoPath Forms Services, which make it simple to use, share, secure and manage interactive forms across an organization.
  • The addition of two new SharePoint SKUs for Internet-facing sites, including an on-premises and hosted offer

“In today’s economy, controlling costs and expenses is essential,” said David Glenn, director of Enterprise Operations at Del Monte Foods Co. “However, we still have the requirement to make sure our employees, customers and partners can get the information they need to be productive, no matter where they are. SharePoint 2010 is going to allow us to do that more effectively.”

Microsoft SharePoint 2010 is part of the next wave of Microsoft Office-related products, which includes Microsoft Office 2010, Microsoft Project 2010, Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 and Microsoft Visio 2010, that are designed to give people the best productivity experience across PCs, phones and browsers.
