Vous le savez tous déjà, Steve Ballmer l’a dit, des milliards de blogs l’ont déjà annoncé, etc…

Cependant, je ne pouvais pas m’empêcher ! Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 et Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 en version Beta sont disponibles.

Windows 7 est disponible sur MSDN et TechNet (pour ceux qui ont un abonnement), mais très bientôt à tous (dans la limite d’un million 1/2 de downloads, si je ne m’abuse)

You may think like me that huge events have all their boring sessions…

Well, I begun look at the Day #2 keynote from the PDC and though I will stop and switch to another task but the demos of Windows 7 that you can see starting around the 20th minutes of the keynote were amazing !

Windows 7 on my laptop

I could not resist… so I installed the PDC build of Windows 7 Enterprise x64 on my laptop :-)

Just in case, I first realized a computer backup on a USB HDD of my Windows Vista which created a 75GB VHD I can use to totally restore my system if needed.

The installation took about 20 minutes from a DVD on my Lenovo T61p and I was quickly able to begin the real stuff !

First good thing, I only had to pick from the Lenovo web site install the drivers for the several Ricoh card readers… Network adapter, NVidia and all other devices were recognized and installed with built-in drivers. I just ran a Windows Update to keep those drivers up to date…

So far, I didn’t install any other driver…

I then began to install required Corporate applications (anti-virus, RAS stuff, …) and just after Microsoft Office and all the “administrative” applications I daily use.

I was able to mount the VHD (See my previous post) created under Windows Vista and retrieve all my data quickly.

Well… after a full day of use, Windows 7 and every applications run fine !

I’m quite confident in the behavior of this release but still looking forward new builds…

Again, the development of an operating system being quite complex, some of the aspects presented here may have not been tested deeply to ensure the consistance of the whole system and may be altered in the future and thus not reflect this current post content.

Yeah, I’ve got a build…

So just after the installation, I had a quick look at what changed the most from Windows Vista.

Be kind to remember that Windows 7 is still a BETA and some features described here as well as screen shots are subject to change in later versions until and to the RTM.

Partitioning

There is now a mandatory 200MB partition (not reachable through Windows Explorer) which hosts the BCD (Boot Data Configuration). The machine is then ready for BitLocker with a smaller partition to store the boot mechanism.

You can now create or attach a VHD from the Disk Manager :

Windows Backup

You can now select easily a network share as a backup location
You can now select what you want to include in your backup (files and/or folders)

Windows Explorer

You have now a new type of folders called libraries used to organize types of files

Miscelleaneous

You can create a recovery disc that embed some tools used for recovery or restore the system
PowerShell v2 is already installed, including an editor

Until now, I appreciated what I saw… so, why not install it on my laptop ?

Nouvelles fonctionnalités de Windows Server 2008 R2

Un bref aperçu des nouveautés apportées par Windows Server 2008 R2 (en plagiant le site MSLive.fr) :

Hyper-V 2.0 : l’un des rôles les plus convoités de Windows Server 2008 fera peau neuve avec l’intégration de la fonctionnalité Live Migration permettant ainsi de déplacer des Machines Virtuelles d’un hôte à un autre sans aucune interruption de service en se basant sur un nouveau système de fichiers partagées nommé Clustered Shared Volumes. Hyper-V 2.0 supportera dorénavant 32 processeurs logiques contre 24 actuellement ainsi que la possibilité d’ajout de disque supplémentaire sans redémarrage. Enfin l’allocation de mémoire vive pourra se faire de manière dynamique entre les machines.
Boot from VHD : il sera maintenant possible de directement démarrer sur un VHD et ainsi d’utiliser le matériel de la machine hôte !
Administration : la console « Server Manager » permettra d’administrer des serveurs à distance, de nouveaux assistants de migration des principaux rôles feront leur apparition comme une nouvelle console dédiée à la gestion d’Active Directory basée sur PowerShell.
PowerShell 2.0 sera également intégré à l’OS avec de nouvelles commandes bien évidemment pouvant faire appel au Framework .NET puisque celui-ci sera même intégré dans la version Core !
Direct Access qui permettra de se connecter à des ressources d’entreprise à distance sans utilisation de VPN en utilisant des technologies comme SSTP, IPSec and IPv6.

Windows 7, now the race is started

I speak about the race with medias and other groups of interest who will really begin now to fight against (and some, for) Windows 7.

My opinion for the moment is : wait and see… I’m waiting for a first build to decide if I would be a something interesting to work on so early in this new system’s life and if I decide to use it daily.

Lancement virtualisation

Le grand évènement consacré à la virtualisation s'est tenu aujourd'hui à Bellevue.

Parmi les annonces on peut retenir l'arrivée prochaine de Hyper-V Server (d'ici une trentaine de jours) et une information croustillante sur Hyper-V v. Next (la version qui sera inclus dans Windows Server 2008 R2).

Microsoft Hyper-V Server : la version "boîte noire" de Hyper-V. Cette version ressemble fort à une édition Core de Windows Server 2008 mais ce n'est pas Windows même si, pour être honnête, Hyper-V Server s'appuie tout de même sur les mêmes fondations en ne proposant que le service de virtualisation.

Hyper-V Server sera disponible gratuitement depuis le site de téléchargement de Microsoft.

Live Migration : enfin... c'est public ! Live Migration (le pendant de VMotion chez notre ami VMware) fera partie des nouvelles fonctionnalités de la prochaine version de Hyper-V. Parmi d'autres...
