We've got an application (legacy) that after you've installed it on Vista, causes backups to fail with the error:

"File backup failed. The error is: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)."

I've also been able to produce a log file for the backup, but I can't deduce from it any useful information.

The only error it mentions is:

[FUNCT] 0x850 - ENTER - _GetElementData

[ERROR] 0x850 - bootlib.cpp#515 [0x490]

[FUNCT] 0x850 - EXIT - _GetElementData [0x490]

And it stops with the following lines:

[FUNCT] 0x850 - EXIT - DiskListPopulateLayoutInfo [0x0]

Backup is now completely useless. My last successful incremental backup was on Feb 4 and when the next one was attempted on Feb 9 it failed.

I had done a registry cleanup to solve some problems I had with Adobe flashplayer & Java during that period, but after going through the logs of Registry Mechanic and restoring everything not related with those issues it hasn't fixed it.

I'd be OK starting from scratch with a fresh complete backup. However, even changing the settings to attempt that fails to fix the bug :-(

I have used “vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /MaxSize=8GB” and also deleted all my restore points to get down to 19gb. there should be options to delete particular restore points, and to set the max size in "System Properties \ System Protection".

cheers

It's down to profile entries in the registry without a Profile Image Path.

Look at the keys in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

I had two keys here lacking image paths. Deleted them both and backup is working again!

No idea how those keys came to be there. Maybe MS should look at what happens when user accounts get deleted (i.e. to check that no erroneous keys are left that can cause backup to fail).
