in 12-18 months its proberly getting hard to find a server that ships with a drive included pr default , and if its possible at all im sure it will be a dvd.

and if its a old server dont use it for exchange :)

It was bound to happen some time and now according to KC Lemson (the release manager for Exchange) Exchange 12 will ship on a single DVD.

Not one of my servers has a DVD-ROM drive. This doubtless isn't a surprise, and shouldn't bother anyone - with one caveat.

As well as supporting networked installs through a UNC path or mapped drive, it would be phenomenally handy to support installing through client-local drives mapped in Terminal Services/Remote Desktop. I quite often use the "connect automatically to local disk drives" option, but have been frustrated on several occasions when it comes to installing software from those mapped drives. If you can support that configuration, I'll be a very happy bunny.

I still say yall should just sell a link and then let us burn it to whatever media we choose.
Save money on the marketing people making up a snazzy box for it to ship in, save money on shipping, and I know those neat hologram DVDs arent cheap.
Also, you could get everyone a copy the day it is ready... you wouldn't have to wait for the factory to print a 100,000 DVDs first.
CD? DVD? quit being so 1998ish :-D

Let's see, you'll spend 1000's of dollars on an e-mail system to run your company, but not a few bucks to have a DVD drive handy - go figure.

Glad to hear that MS has moved to DVD, although putting the other languages on a diff DVD might be wise, for those of us that don't need 'as many languages as possible'

There is a good idea, download a DVD sized image? Some people don't have a OC3 available to them. Better yet, try to build a server farm and network infrastructure to handle hundreds(if not thousands) of clients trying to download said images. Its cheaper for MS to ship them, and a lot less headaches for us. Go spend the $80 or so to buy a dvd drive and copy it where you need it.

I am just glad I won't have to sit and feed the server CDs.

DVD drives can be had for less than $20 at every geek's favorite hardware site (newegg), so I can't imagine the cost is a factor for anyone. For $65, I'd expect 3 DVD-ROM drives or a decent DVD burner.

I imagine it's fair to say that customers will have a DVD drive somewhere in the network, and so is it really a problem to pursue installation from an administrative share location? Media seems to be changing from final installation source to supply channel, with more and more software supplied via download (and god forbid - bittorrent) these days.

My question is - what is the approximate timeframe for when this DVD will ship with it's lovely lovely contents?

Well, like I said, we're talking about this over a year in advance. There have been some rough dates mentioned in articles in the press too.
