Live and Instant Messenger – on your blog

I know that sometimes I’m not too good at answering my emails immediately, and then the pile up and overwhelm me.  My phone number is on my blog but people only usually use it when they’re totally desperate and angry – or it’s Christmas day and they can’t work out how to install their printer or something like that.

Well I found something over on Angus Logan’s blog today that I thought I’d try out for a while.  Have a look at his home page for the full width version (I customised mine)

It’s the beta of Live Messenger, embedded in a web page  - any web page.  My presence is enabled so you can chat to me whenever you see me online.

All you need to do is to enable the IM control here and then paste the code onto your web page.  There’s more info about the IM control here if you want to do some more research.

Of course this won’t  be visible if you only read my feeds via RSS, but I thought it may come in handy if anyone happens to notice that I’m online via my Web page.

A word of warning though – don’t refresh the web page when you’re using this as you’ll have to sign in again – but then again – it’s currently in beta.  It took me a couple of minutes to insert the code in my blog as I had to change the width of the page from the default to get it in my style sheet, but it was easy enough.

So if any of you are thinking about helpdesk type enabled web pages for your customers, then this sort of control may be just what you’re looking for – to make that closer connection.

I’ll let you know if anyone uses it to chat to me…
