Exchange 2007 Sp1: Disclosure or not?

So we've been trying to keep this confidential for a while.  unfortunately one of my colleagues in the world wide Evangelist team (over in Latin America) leaked the information" early.  So the Exchange team have been forced to talk about what's in Exchange 2007 SP1 earlier than they wanted to.  Why do we keep things confidential you ask?  Well, it's actually for a reason.   SP1 will not be available to you for quite a while yet.  Heck, we've only just released Exchange 2007!

And things change.

All the time.  It's the dynamic nature of the way we do business here at Microsoft

There are daily meetings over at the product team.  War room meetings where we assess how things are going.  We decide to drop things from the product development cycle, due to time pressures delivering world class products that give customers value.  We drop components that are too early on in their development cycle, have too many bugs, are not mature enough, not "complete" enough to release.  So we keep things confidential till we "know" what's going in the product.  But here's a case in point where we've been forced to disclose what's coming up in the next service pack for Exchange - earlier than we'd planned to.  so here's some of the new features:

• SP1 will include features around the following areas…

– EAS Policy Extensions

We'll have new policies for:

Enforcing encryption of main memory contents on device

Enforcing which applications are allowed/blocked from running on the device

Enforcing networking capabilities: disable wifi, Bluetooth, infrared, external storage

Enforcing communication capabilities: disable SMS, MMS, POP/IMAP, disable camera

– OWA Feature Enhancements

SP1 will fill in the feature holes that we just didn't have time to complete by RTM:

– Language Support

OWA 2007 SP1 spell checking will add support for:

Arabic

Korean

– Microsoft Office 2007 Document Converters

– Import/Export PST Support in Move-Mailbox Command

– Option to Delete Special Folder Messages from Mailbox During Export

– Exchange Management Console Enhancements

SP1 will fill in the GUI holes that we just didn't have time to complete by RTM, including:

Public folder configuration

POP and IMAP configuration

SendAs permission configuration

Web Services

New web service coverage will include:

Public folder access

Delegate management

Folder permission management

IPv6

– Public Folder Admin as Role in Delegation Wizard

– Additional Web Services

– IPv6 Support

– Standby Continuous Replication (SCR)

For such a great feature, we obviously needed a new name!

With Exchange 2007, we introduced Clustered Continuous Replication (CCR) for replication of data between 2 servers within a cluster within the same datacenter. With SCR, data replicates to a non-clustered server in a remote datacenter. If the primary datacenter becomes unavailable, the standby replica in the second datacenter is readily available to be activated.

- Also...

Move Mailbox

This vital tool administrator tool has been beefed up to include import and export to a PST

Personal distribution lists

S/MIME

Rules

Monthly calendar view

Deleted items recovery

OWA 2007 SP1 will add support for viewing Office 2007 file formats as HTML.

On Longhorn Server, we will support Exchange 2007 on native IPv6 networks.

Are there any more features?  Yes!

Am I going to disclose them?  No...

Then the UC group will not have to run around to set the message straight, earlier than they'd planned to and can set the  scene for appropriate disclosure at a time of their choice.

You know, all the time that Robert Scoble worked for us, he had access to all sorts of confidential information due to the position of trust he worked in.  But did he disclose any of it?

No.

He gave hints to the fact that stuff was coming up, and guidance for how much you would be excited by the news coming out.  But leak something?  No way.  So the unnamed ITE in South America take note..

And stay silent in future.  You'll influence many more in a positive direction that way...
