DPM 2007 Rollup Update -- NOW AVAILABLE

We are very excited to announce that the ‘Rollup Update’ for System Center Data Protection Manager 2007 is now available.

There are new workloads to be protected, as well as new features in this update, including:

Windows Server 2008 support

Run DPM2007 Server on a Windows Server 2008 platform

Protect Windows Server 2008 – including Core systems

Protect Windows Server 2008 System State

Use of RemoteApp to enable DPM administration remotely

While DPM2007 has actually been protecting “Longhorn” since Beta 3, this makes Windows Server 2008 a supported protected workload

Protect SQL Server 2008

Including the ability to restore SQL Server 2005 databases to a SQL Server 2008 server for test migrations and ensuring that after you have updated your environment to SQL Server 2008, you will still be able to recover older SQL 2005 databases, when needed.

While DPM has actually been protecting "Katmai" since customer technology preview 4 (July 2007), this makes SQL Server 2008 a supported protect-able workload

Protect clustered Virtual Server 2005 R2 hosts

DPM 2007 could already protect clustered-Exchange, clustered-SQL Server and clustered-File Services … but clustered virtualization hosts was not initially available in DPM 2007 RTM. Now for those environments that understand that as they rely on virtualization, the virtualization host needs to be highly available – those platforms are protected by DPM, as well.

New media capabilities – added based on feedback from some of our early DPM enterprise customers

Tape media sharing – so that multiple protection groups with similar tape retention periods can now share tapes

Tape library sharing – multiple DPM servers can now share your enterprise tape library silo’s. This one has been running in MSIT for a while.

DPM hotfixes via Microsoft Update

Our first Update (KB 910330) is now LIVE on Microsoft Update.

Steps for opt-in to Microsoft Update:

1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate
2. Click Start Now
3. On the Review the license agreement page, click Continue.
4. Click Install.

Note:
- You may not be prompted to install the Microsoft Update software if this software is already available on the computer

Steps for enabling Automatic Updates:

1.      Go to My computer -> Properties
2.      Switch to Automatic Updates Tab

Hotfix: Short File Name & Access Denied issues

We recently released a hotfix for an issue related to short file name issues and "access denied" error.

(906881) - You may receive an "Access Denied" error message when you use the synchronization with consistency check feature in Data Protection Manager and you are running Windows Server 2003.

The problem occurs because during a consistency check, both the long name and the short name of each file must match. Short names are assigned according to the order in which they are created. Therefore, the short names of the files on the destination server may not match the short names of the files on the source server. For example, this problem occurs in the following scenario: . The LongFileName02.txt file is created on the source

server. The short name of the LongFileName02.txt file is LongFi~1.txt.

The LongFileName01.txt file is created on the source server. The short name of the LongFileName01.txt file is LongFi~2.txt.
A consistency check is run. The files are validated by using the long name in alphabetical order. The LongFileName01.txt file is validated
first.
A LongFileName01.txt file is created on the replica. This file is given the LongFi~1.txt short name.
During the next synchronization, the LongFileName02.txt file is created. The short name of this file is LongFi~2.txt.
In this scenario, the short names of LongFileName02.txt and LongFileName01.txt are exchanged.

The next time that you run a consistency check, the synchronization fails because the long name and the short name of each file do not match.

Therefore, the replica remains inconsistent with the source server.

This patch is available from PSS (Product Support Services) and can be obtained by calling them (free call). We would recommend installing this hotfix on all DPM servers in production where you are seeing this problem.

IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION

Please use the updated QFE 911169 instead of 906881. There is no KB article for 911169 yet but it is a super set of the 906881 QFE. This patch is available from PSS (Product Support Services) and can be obtained by calling them (free call).

Please do not use QFE 906881 as you would need to install 911169 anyway. Sorry for the confusion.

910330: Hotfix for shadowcopies getting overwritten

We recently released a hotfix for an issue related to missing shadow copies.
The KB associated with the same is:

(910330) - Described a problem where stored shadow copies are overwritten
even if there is sufficient storage space allocated for shadow copies in
Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2006. You must install a
hotfix to resolve this problem.

We would recommend installing this hotfix on all DPM servers in production.
