&lt;p&gt;I get an error that the update failed to complete, and it rolls back.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;When we look at the DataProtectionManager-KB949779.log file, we see the following:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;MSI (s) (B8:28) [10:58:00:065]: Product: Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007 - Update 'Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2007 Update - KB949779' could not be installed. In the setup log this event occurs:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;_PreserveRegistrySettings.97DDF5B3_3770_4C3E_8673_52BD081E1EFD. Return value 3.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Return value 3 being a fatal error. Using Process Monitor one failed registry access stood out; an attempt to read an InstallPath key at this location:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Setup\&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I created a string key called InstallPath and populated it with the path to the DPM installation (C:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM in my case), and the patch went through fine.&lt;/p&gt;
