Why Enterprises Like Vista

Many current conversations turn to Vista, much of it rhetorical. Here are some thinkngs that have been going on in the meantime in Vista -Land:

When we talk to enterprises we hear from customers such as :

·         Sielte, one of Europe’s leading technology companies, deployed more than 2000 Windows Vista desktops.  Doing so improved employee productivity 20%, and decreased help desk calls by 20%

·         By upgrading all 6000 of its company’s desktops to Windows Vista, Germany’s Heidelberg Printing saved more than $1.1M in administrative and operating expenses.

·         The United States Air Force has already deployed 7500 Windows Vista PCs, and is on track to increase that number to more than 150,000 over the next several months. Security of the OS and the centralized management called out as key factors .

For consumers –(we realize the challenges in the early stages created frustration ) but now 16 months out from launch we know the experience has improved from the new pc.

Windows Windows Vista SP1 Improvements

·       SP1 delivered performance improvements in many of the most common file copy scenarios, including:

o  Local File Copy (disk to disk): 44% increase

o  File copy from an older PC to an SP1 PC (via SMB1): 45% increase

o  File copy from Server 2008 to SP1 PC (via SMB2): 50% increase

o  File copy from an SP1 PC to an SP1 PC (via SMB2): 50% increase

o  Decompressing contents of a large folder: 71% increase

·       We’ve worked closely with OEMs to improve Startup and Shutdown times:

o  Average Startup Time improved from 90 seconds (Windows Windows Vista RTM with no optimization) to 45 seconds (Windows Windows Vista SP1 with optimization).

·       Average Shutdown Time improved from 30 seconds (Windows Windows Vista RTM with no optimization) to 11 seconds (Windows Windows Vista SP1 with optimization).

From what I'm seeing, those who are using Vista SP1 like it. In fact, some of my friends are truly enjoying it on their Macs, but thats another story..

(For those of you who have been around the block, this whole saga kinda reminds me of when Microsoft launched XP)... :)
