Interesting Downloads - Alternate Format....

I received some feedback from my peers that it might be better to just paste all of the information for the interesting downloads into the post itself. This of course means the info will get indexed and that makes it more discoverable. It also makes for some terribly LOOOONG posts. You don't have to read the whole post to find the information you are looking for though. The links at the top of the post will automatically scroll you down to the matching sections below. Think of them as an active table of contents.

Please let me know what format you prefer!

Cheers!

Terminal Services Management Pack for Operations Manager 2007

Brief Description

The Terminal Services Management Pack monitors the individual Terminal Services components on Windows Server 2000, 2003 and 2008.

Overview

The Terminal Services Management Pack helps you manage your computers running Terminal Services on Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003, or Windows 2000 Server by monitoring the health of the Terminal Services with the help of server role services.
Feature Summary
Terminal servers running Windows 2000 Server use the following role services:

  • Terminal Server: With the Terminal Server role service, a server can host Microsoft Windows–based programs or the full Windows desktop. Users can connect to a terminal server to run programs, to save files, and to use network resources on that server.
  • TS Licensing: Terminal Services Licensing (TS Licensing) manages the Terminal Services client access licenses (TS CALs) that are required for each device or user to connect to a terminal server. You use TS Licensing to install, issue, and monitor the availability of TS CALs on a Terminal Services license server.

Windows Server 2003 adds the following role service:

  • Session Directory: The Terminal Services Session Directory service tracks sessions on terminal servers running Windows Server 2003 and ensures that client computers connect to their existing sessions.

The following additional role services are used in conjunction with Windows Server 2008:

  • TS Web Access: With Terminal Services Web Access (TS Web Access), users can access RemoteApp programs and a Remote Desktop connection to the terminal server through a Web site. TS Web Access also includes Remote Desktop Web Connection, with which users can remotely connect to any computer where they have Remote Desktop access.
  • TS Gateway: With Terminal Services Gateway (TS Gateway), authorized remote users can connect to resources on an internal corporate network from any Internet-connected device that can run the Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) client.
  • TS Session Broker: Terminal Services Session Broker (TS Session Broker) supports session load balancing between terminal servers in a farm and reconnection to an existing session in a load-balanced terminal server farm.

Note:

  • In Windows Server 2008, the name of the Terminal Services Session Directory feature was changed to Terminal Services Session Broker (TS Session Broker).
  • When there is problem with the availability or performance of one of these components, Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 uses the Terminal Services Management Pack to detect the issue and alert you so that you can diagnose the problem and fix it.

    • Storage: Logical hard drives are checked for availability, sufficient free space, and integrity of the NTFS partition.
    • Network: Network adapters are checked for connection health, name and IP address conflicts.
  • Performance
    • Processor: System processor(s) performance is checked system-wide. Processors can optionally be monitored on a per processor basis.
    • Memory: Memory consisting of physical memory and virtual memory (also known as page files) is monitored using the following performance indicators:
      • Available memory (in MB)
      • Pages per second
      • Page file percent usage
    • Disks and Partitions: Logical disks/partitions and physical disks are monitored, and performance data is collected for average disk seconds per read, disk seconds per write, and disk seconds per transfer. Depending on which version of the operating system is being monitored, either logical or physical monitoring is enabled by default. Refer to the MP guide for more detail.
    • Network Adapter: Network adapters are monitored for the number of bytes received per second, the number of bytes sent per second, and the total bytes per second. In addition, the health state of the network adapter is evaluated and is set to Healthy if connected and Critical if disconnected.

Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2008 Update 1

Brief Description

Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2008 Update 1 is the recommended process and toolset to automate desktop and server deployment.

Overview

Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2008 Update 1 unifies the tools and processes required for desktop and server deployment into a common deployment console and collection of guidance. The fourth generation deployment accelerator adds integration with recently released Microsoft deployment technologies to create a single path for image creation and automated installation. MDT’s tools and end-to-end guidance reduce deployment time, standardize desktop and server images, limit service disruptions, reduce post-deployment help desk costs, and improve security and ongoing configuration management.
Microsoft Deployment Toolkit technologies eliminate interaction time required to install desktop and server operating systems. Interaction at the targeted computer may take a few moments using the Lite Touch Installation (LTI) method or it can be completely automated using Zero Touch Installation (ZTI). Zero Touch Installation utilizes Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 or Systems Management Server 2003 with the Operating System Deployment Feature Pack. Lite Touch Installation can be used when software distribution tools are not in place.
Microsoft Deployment Tookit 2008 Update 1 also uses Configuration Manager 2007’s stand-alone media-initiated operating system deployment feature. This release offers project management guidance for all deployment roles and separates technical documentation for the products and technologies to facilitate automation tasks.
What’s New in MDT 2008 Update 1?
MDT 2008 Update 1 includes new capability for OEM preload scenarios, a revised System Center Operations Manager Management Pack, bug fixes, and revised documentation. This updated version provides guidance in the .chm help file format only. If you need the guidance in .doc file format, you can download it here.
MDT 2008 Update 1 enables deployment of the following Microsoft products:

  • Windows Vista Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate (32 and 64 bit) RTM and SP1
  • Office Professional, Professional Plus, Enterprise, and Ultimate 2007
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2003 R2 (32 and 64 bit)
  • Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 and Service Pack 3 (32 and 64 bit) or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

Choosing the Right Version
Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2008 Update 1 is offered in two versions to support Solution Accelerator component installation on x64 or x86 hosts. Select the version that corresponds with your host hardware type. Both versions of Microsoft Deployment Toolkit support deployment of x86 and x64 Windows operating systems.
The Quick Start and Getting Started guides for MDT 2008 Update 1 are available as a separate download on this page for those who want to quickly evaluate MDT by viewing condensed, step-by-step instructions for using it to install Windows operating systems.

Preload Package Tool for Configuration Manager 2007

Brief Description

The SMS 2003 Toolkit tool Package Loader Tool has been updated to support Configuration Manager 2007

Overview

The Preload Package Tool (PreloadPkgOnSite.exe) is used to manually install compressed copies of software distribution package source files on Configuration Manager 2007 sites. After package source files are installed, a status message is sent up the site hierarchy indicating the presence of the new package source files. This avoids sites higher in the hierarchy from copying package source files over the network when distribution points at child site are selected to host software distribution package content that has already been preloaded on them.
The following feature enhancements have been made to the tool since it was released in the SMS 2003 Toolkit:

  • SQL Server named instance support
  • Administrator specified StoredPkgVersion value support
