I am currently using STSADM to backup our SSP. The search DB is included in that backup and I was wondering if there is an STSADM command that will allow me to back up only the SSP web application and not the DBs

Can that be done?

Thanks!

Are you interested in not taking the Search DBs with you when you restore your SSP as specified in the searchdatabasename parameter?

I would like to restore the SSP and then just recrawl everything to recreate the search DB and index. I am just looking at options to save disk space if possible...

Will STSADM allow me to do this? Thanks...

1. create a empty database that will be the new Search DB

2. use the stsadm -restoressp command as above and point at the new Search DB

Your restored SSP should now be associated with the new clean Search DB and you should then be able to re-crawl.

Let me know if this doesn't work.

Very interesting post. I work for a Gov't agency that wants to test MOSS 2007 but our security policy doesn't allow "single box" installation of the SQL 2005 Express and the web components. Is there a way to do a "basic" farm install separating the "free" SQL 2005 Express edition (with the 4GB limits lifted) onto another W2K3 SP1 machine and run the web front end server on another? We plan on purchasing the full 2005 license and it sounds like a "farm" scenario is appropriate here but I just know that if we demo the thing without plans to upgrade we will be painting ourselves into a corner...Thanks!

The standalone install is also known as a 1-click install and installs/uses SQL Express on the same machine, I think what you are describing would require a small farm install. If you wanted to do a quick install with minimal config work to have a running server then standalone is best. If like you mentioned the security policy prevents you from doing this, you may need to go thru the farm configuration with a demo version of SQL Server.
