Niveus Media just released Niveus Media Center Companion, new software for Windows Media Center owners that turns any laptop, desktop, or tablet PC into a super remote control for Windows Media Center.

According to the press release Niveus Media Center Companion finds the networked Windows Media Center system and directly connects to the Media Center eco-system, enabling full remote control functions from anywhere within range of the wired or wireless network. Moreover you don’t have to have a Niveus Media Center to download the software.

Niveus customers can download the full version of Niveus Media Center Companion, but anyone who has a Windows Vista PC can download the basic version for free. The basic version does not work with extenders, but it will work with Windows Media Center directly connected to a home entertainment network.

The press release went on to state that the Niveus Media Center Companion software will download the entire media database of music, photos, television shows, and more, displaying rich cover art and metadata on the Windows Client.  Even though the actual media is in the Windows Media Center the entire Media Center music catalogue can be viewed and accessed via the Windows Client, allowing users to navigate, pick, and play their favorite songs and albums without ever powering on the display.
