So the domains are verified and I am now going to configure them to get the full functionality.

The first stage is to note the set up you get ‘out-of'-box’.

On completion of the GApps signup & Verification you are presented with a step by step guide of tasks to do:

google apps set up

The BPOS version of this is a list of ‘to do tasks’ at the top of the admin console:

BPOS admin centre

GApps ‘out-of-box’ install lacked the main component – EMAIL. I had to configure the email service manually by going back into the Domain Admin settings, and adding the MX records. However you can select a drop down for the main registrars and the instructions will be very specific

google apps mail set up google apps mail set up mx

Out of box everything in BPOS is configured EXCEPT for the Office Communication Online service, however this needed just a button to be clicked to enable.

To use the service on a local machine GApps used its home in the cloud to arrange everything except the chat client and your users can receive an email with all the links to their service within it:

image

Whereas BPOS used Microsoft’s Client experience to offer both clients to access BPOS and online logins:

image

BPOS needed  downloads, the Single Sign on Client, and Office Communicator 2007 R2

BPOS downloads1

GApps chat client as mentioned above is downloaded from here:

So there we have in, configured to the ‘Out-of-Box’ level. The next stage will be in the user console and experience of carrying out basic tasks like IM, Email, editing documents and collaborating online.

The next stage was to test out both trials. The ease of sign-up and basic out of box configuration was something I wanted to get to grips with as well as later test the full functionality. However as this section states, this is the sign up phase.

The first part of this was to purchase 2 domains. So I bought these from godaddy as are cheap, quick and simple to configure: (the reason for BPOScompete.com is highlighted below)

googleappsdemo.co.uk (and googleappdemo.com)

BPOScompete.com

BPOS and GApps both have simple places to go to sign up for a trial and were easy to locate. BPOS utilising LIVE-ID, whereas GApps using the Google Checkout.

BPOS was VERY easy to set up, input domain, input live ID and my address details that weren’t already attributed to my account and I received an email…SORTED!

BPOS signup trial

However my first problem with GApps was that it wouldn’t let me use my domain. So not being able to use the .co.uk I purchased a .com domain. It turned out GApps wouldnt let me sign up wit a domain with “google” in it, so I had to buy another domain to use, this one was BPOScompete.com.  googleappsdemo signup

Not a great start google! However, imagine my horror when I was directed to the Google checkout and asked how many users I wish to trial, and when selecting 3 I was prompted to enter my card details for about £120. Google claim they only ‘Allocate’ the funds so that they can be taken out the moment my trial is over if I don’t cancel. I don’t know how you feel about this, but this strikes me as one of those cheap companies that rely on you forgetting to cancel or missing the deadline, and this did NOT fill me with confidence.

Google checkout

So now I have my trial and my domains I had to link them together or Verify my domain so BPOS and GApps know I ACTUALLY own the domain. Both companies required a similar set up:

BPOS domain verify co uk

Verify domain

As I hadn’t selected any hosting options on the domains I purchased I opted with both companies to create a CNAME record. This was then verified by BPOS and GApps in turn and voila, I had verified my domains and the standard set up was complete.

Ok so the battle has been building up and…. there are many options a business can take when looking to deploy Core technology, especially starting from scratch. The main concern in this discussion is the hosted options. This means there is no need for on premise servers, and therefore the cost that goes for managing them. For now anyway I will assume I have a 8 seater start-up company that has no money for hardware, and a hosted solution fits perfectly as we all have our own laptops.

Firstly – The disclaimer : In the days of everyone suing everyone else I thought it would be prudent to state that this blog post is in no way a representation of any company I work for, or designed to fault any other product, it is merely an indication as to what steps I have encountered during my own personal set up of these services and may not represent the experience of others.

Now that’s out the way lets have a look at the options:

Microsoft BPOS

Google Apps

Email Exchange GMail
Calendar Exchange Google Calendar
Collaboration Sharepoint Google sites
Office Work Office Google Docs
IM Office Communicator Google Talk beta
Other Live Meeting Google Video

So now lets have a look at the specs for the Premier accounts: (The standard accounts are difficult to compare as only include mail and calendar for Google, but are modular for BPOS)

Microsoft BPOS

Google Apps

Default Mailbox Size 5Gb 25Gb
Max Mailbox Size 25Gb 25Gb
SLA uptime 99.9% 99.9%
Annual Cost $120 $50
Phone support 24/7 24/7

Its worth noting at this point that based on the SLA uptime, both have a different way of repaying downtime.
Google Apps will give you more time free based on the length of time you were down for. IE a recent downtime of 3 days was rewarded with 15 days service free.
Microsoft will reimburse your costs based on the length of time you were down for. IE money back

So BPOS:

2009-11-24deadimac1[1]

“Apple's new Core i7-based iMac might be a performance monster, but it looks like the whole family's having some problems getting out of the gate: in addition to the previously-noted performance issues with the Core 2 Duo models, a quick glance across Apple's support forums and on other Mac boards around the web reveals that some machines are showing up DOA and / or with cracked screens”

Also please do have a look at the comments section below the post…… apple people may not feel so comfortable anymore? you decide…

Apologies for the delay in getting this information up and available, but with the launches of late it has been a little manic to say the least…… So here is a shed load of information for you guys from the New Microsoft Partner Network:

The traditional view has always been to carry out your everyday business, doing what you do best, using technology where it comes up. However, this isn’t ideal as often companies are spending unwisely. Open source, the appeal of ‘free’ technology is very misguided. By leveraging new technologies you can really save money, but don’t take my word for it. Click above to read the article on how Microsoft can save you money, even when you have to pay for the software initially. Improving productivity, saving costs on management and maintenance and reducing energy costs are all major players in the way WE help YOU save money.

Microsoft have done it, they have come up with not only a competitor to Google, but a product that over the first few months has more unique visitors than Google.

Bing isn’t JUST a search engine!!! Its a solution finder! For example, search for a flight number and see the extent of the results and information. Searching for the latest sports updates etc will show you on the main screen without having to click through a host of websites.

Bing not only looks cool, works well but also has loads of features. One thing I will say is that its a beta and works superbly on the US search results, and Microsoft are working hard to carry the back end over into the rest of the world.

Hey Sports fans I am currently in Seattle experiencing the phenomenon of Tech Ready 2009. All I can say is its day 1 and ..WOW

I have been in Norm Judah's Welcoming Keynote, and also not only attended the Kevin Turner opener, but also had a small breakout session with the global Microsoft Academy College Hires hosted by KT himself :-)

There are some amazing sessions, but after seeing the scorecards, our performance over FY09 and looking into the investments we are making and strategies around moving firmly into FY10, its shaping up to be one hell of a Tech Ready and one hell of a Year.

Regarding technology, Server 08 R2, WESS & Windows 7 information? Watch this space!

Some of have seen the road to Win7 videos, and those of you that havent WHY NOT? Its a great collection of vids (even if I do say so myself), but on a serious note we have had some great feedback around the content being worthwhile, so if you want a relaxed environment to learn more about Win7 then feel free:
