Hooked on Facebook

Hello my name is Rodney and I am hooked on Facebook.

At first I wasn't keen on Facebook but everyone I work with was doing it.  I signed up and at first it was cool, I could add people I work with as friends, "poke" them, and laugh at their silly high school pictures.  I then started adding some real friends, which was great because it offered me another way to stay in contact with people in Winnipeg.  It was neat to have old high school friends add me as friends and chat.  I even got to meet up with a few of them.  It was only natural to join the Microsoft and Toronto,ON networks as that is where I work and live now.

Things started getting a little wild when I started adding applications.  With over 3500 applications you can install I was able to customize my profile so that others could see things like my Twitter feed, XBOX Gamercard, and Friend Wheel.  Things got a little crazy with the Twitter application as my feed got filled with all the "news" when I was in Seattle.  I uninstalled that application and got control of Twitter but haven't been that lucky with Facebook.

I finally went over the edge when I started joining groups.  At first groups seem innocent enough.  I joined the Microsoft Canada group, then I joined the EnergizeIT group to keep up to date with EnergizeIT attendees.  It all seemed pretty tame, but then something changed.  Next thing I was joining multiple groups on the same topic; groups like Microsoft Certified System Engineers and MCSE's Canada or Club Volvo and Volvo S40 Owners.  I thought it was great to share my interests with my friends and chat with others who have similar interests.  Soon I was sharing photos in groups, having "wall to wall" chats and posting in the discussion forums.

I finally hit rock bottom when I created the Canadian IT Professionals group.  Creating a group pretty straight forward, and they make inviting all your friends to your new group much too easy.  As of today there are 35 members of this group.  I am happy, but it is not enough!

I need more friends! 

I need to join more groups!

Add me as a friend, invite me to your groups, join my groups........

Now on Facebook I'm collecting IT pros, Getting in more trouble.  

You know I've already been tempted to "poke" Bill Gates or Steve Ballmer but THAT just wouldn't be professional or even funny.

Now I guess I could start collecting MVP's, IT Managers, Programmers.

It's like a giant Digital Pokemon collection.

It's not the user interface; in fact, our friends at the UX Connection would probably wince at some of the antiquated design. For me, it's a combination of a one-stop repository for all things I want to keep and organize to share with friends, colleagues, and acquaintances as well as another one-stop location to "follow" the same people stalking me.

Without a doubt, I am doing things which would otherwise seem too time consuming like short book and movie reviews, creating slide shows and photo albums and now movies. But I also feel like I'm getting a better handle on what's important to my friends.

Unlike you, Rodney, I still like Twittering occasionally and finding out what Ruth, Damir, Rick and many others are doing during their day. Robert Scoble's got me dashing off to various Web 2.0 stopping points as well.

And, finally, I'm making new friends out of acquaintances, renewing friendships with family and school buddies I haven't seen in person for many years, and learning about causes, events, and groups which I otherwise wouldn't have time or inclination to investigate.

I'm an addict, but I think I'll take another drink from the foundation ... right now!
