I meant the two weeks window to take the test, not the actual test time ;) I'm scheduled to be away for those two weeks so wont be able to take it... I wish some test centres were open at weekends.

I just googled for that and found nothing so I'm guessing this is a sneak hint of something to come.  Do you have any more information to share?

Microsoft has announced that the Beta exam for 71-680: TS: Windows 7, Configuring has been opened up.

Um, maybe it's a noob question, but what do you mean under "has been opened up"? It would be my first beta exam so I don't know what this means, because I can't find the exam listed in prometric. Of course I think this is because the registration begins on 27 April, but if this is true, why did you write that it had been opened up?

Tried registering but prometric did not display the 71-680 exam I'm located here in the Philippines

On the prometric site the exam is 70-680: TS: Windows 7, Configuring.

This is just for the beta exam and then will be 71-680 when its open to the public.

This exam is now available for booking. I've booked it for the final Friday before it ends - the 15th (which gives me the Monday if I need to reschedule!).

Hmm, I think MS gave very limitted seats - may be around 50 or so.

I have been able to subscribe for this beta exam at 7am (GMT +1) from the Netherlands. It looks like the promotion starts at midnight (Central time). I've been trying to signup during the whole night.

This really sucks! Normally the exam registration opens up at PST. It wasn't even April 27 at the PST region. I checked the Prometric website at 1:00am (CET) and the exam WASN'T available...when I tried to register at 8:00am (CET) this morning....no more seats were available :(

Where do the 1000-s come from? Normally (even with the Vista exams) they were available at least during the morning (in the CET timezone)....

Just registred a seat in the Netherlands!

i called the Prometric European Support Center and they told me that the test is at the moment only available at india.

For the European Area they have to wait until the US Headquarter is opened and enable the promotion code. Maybe at 4 p.m. German time the promotion Code will work.

So no technical glitch and alle promo codes are filled and no chance to it being opened again?

Next time we (at least in Western Europe) have to stay up all night to try to register? Not kindly fair IMHO, but okay ...

@jseymour You can't be serious that not even us in Europa (and you guys in the US) can't normally register for this beta exam. How many seats were available? Just 100 or so?

OK than the information from prometric hotline was wrong.

But the registration for the beta period was not fair to all interested users all over the world.

I try to register tonight at 0.30 am (German time), but the exam was not listed. Then i try to register again this morning and receive the error "The maximum count for the promotion has been exceeded."

In the last years a microsoft beta exams never reached the maximum count in a couple of hours after opening.

@meerkat, exactly! The beta exams for Windows Server 2008 were even more popular than Windows 7 and everybody had a fair chance for registering.

It would have been helpful if MS had told us the total number for this beta promo and start time when they posted the promo. Now it looks like a lottory game.

Same here in Hungary. At 1:00 the exam wasn't listed at all, and 5 hours later we got the error message about the maximum count was already reached.

How frustrating .. it wasn't listed here in the UK until mid morning, then the website wasn't reachable for hours just to get the exceeded error.

Europe had a bad starting point anyway considering the timezones.

I hate when people registring just because its free and people like us, who are OEM, Gold and SPLA partner don't even get a fair chance :(

Whoever said anything about people registering just because it is free? Surely the people that managed to register have a genuine interest in the product, and sitting the exam?

I've read in several forums that SOME people register for beta exams because they are free.

And first come / first serve is fine IF the registration would be open worldwide at the same time which doesn't seem to be the case ...

Lucky me...I still have a voucher code which I used to register for the exam....too bad MS had to little open seats available :(

I think that's the way it'll pan out - ie Partners and so on be given another special voucher, perhaps tied to their partner ID. That way they don't miss out.

If the amount of seats was really limited that much, it's a shame how it has been communicated in the blogs. When Windows Server 2008 was in beta phase, it really worked much better.

Its even more of a kick in the teeth not being able to register if you work for Microsoft especially if you stayed up til 1am trying, then waking at 7am to find all codes are fully used already.....

I have called the "Microsoft Regional Service Centers: Europe/Germany".

They think it´s an technical error by Prometric but they are not sure.

The agent will me callback as soon as he have more informations.

I think that's it must be a technical issue. I live in Russia, and four hours ago this registration wasn't able, because all promo codes were used :(

I'm really hope, that Microsoft update this bug or make more seats - I was waiting for this exam for a long time, I hope that it will be my first beta.

It's my own fault for missing this... I woke up at 4am EST thinking that would be early enough. You live, you learn.

The only recommendation that I would have for MS in the future regarding BETA exams that are this popular would be to make some requirements.

Some Examples might be....

The BETA tester should have the latest Client exam passed.

The BETA tester should have taken an MS exam within in a specified time frame.

Giving just one time is fine as long as the worldwide Prometric centers play ball and update the sites accordingly.

As someone who tried at 8:00am EST, I'm a little frustrated. (I set an Outlook alarm just to remind me)

Perhaps Microsoft should:

a) begin charging a small fee for beta exams (to set the bar slightly higher)

b) post less time ahead/only on this blog to limit the number of people aware

Having 20,000 people aware of a test that costs them nothing yet could potentially count as a certification certainly skewed the supply/demand.

My primary issue is that this is the *Beta Exam Blog*, so you'd think that this blog, of all, might let people know that they should stay up until midnight in order to get a spot. Saying "first-come, first-served" means little when it is followed by a statement that the test will be filled "in the first week or so".

As someone who has the beta blog RSS feed, and follows it fairly religiously, I'm a little disappointed.

Would you still be able to sign up for the exam but just pay the $125? I understand that not all people would want to do that for a beta exam, but it looks like that is possible, no?

Yes, the promo code simply gives you the 100% discount. I am just not willing to pay for being a guinea pig ..

The most frustrating bit is really that Prometric screwed up us Europeans ..

It is a Beta Exam and takes 4hrs. You might have to wait for few weeks for the result. If it was a regular exam it may be less than 2hrs and know the results once you completed the test.

So I might pay and take it when it is released but now I hope we all given another chance. I wouldn't be paying for it now.

If indeed, you're allowed to pay the money to take the exam, I'm happy to sign up for it. Microsoft, what say you? I don't want to throw $125 towards Prometric if they're not going to allow me to take it...

I'm gutted that you can't register for this exam now.... have been using 7 for about 5 months now and love it.... was really looking forward to taking this exam.

I suppose it's a bit of a rock and hard place situation for Microsoft. On one hand the old MCP email invite procedure ensured that they had a degree of control over who took it (as well as requiring the person being invited to have already entered into the Microsoft testing programme) but on the other hand, publicising the beta and code means it's a free for all and invariably there will be taking this exam merely because it's free and a chance of a cert.... that 'I'll have a go and see how I get on' scenario..... it's not costing them anything.

Personally I wish they'd structure the beta exam process better. For instance if they gave a 1/3 of the seats as 'MCP invite only', and 1/3 to Partners, TechNet Plus, etc and the final 1/3 open to the public, then I think they'd get much better feedback on the exam and a broader scope of professionals.

The beta exam process, after all, is to 'test' the exam and provide feedback on questions. I can recall on the 2008 betas providing a great deal of feedback yet I wonder how much they will get from this 7 beta. I suspect it will be little and a substantial portion of people are taking this beta as a chance to earn a free cert rather than genuinely participate in the beta process.

@testtaker : Most of the people who signed up are from the US. A lot of people in Europe (including me) didn't even get the option on the Prometric site as soon as the registration started. Once we did see it, it was all gone already.

In the Netherlands it costs E 140,- which is $ 183,60. I looked forward to this exam for a long time, but I didn't know they would use Australian time zone to open the registrations.

Well I pulled the trigger and spent the money for it, we'll see what happens. I got the confirmation email from Prometric and everything looks like it went through fine. I guess I'll find out soon if this will actually work. I personally am happy to pay for this since it counts toward certification. If I pass, then I'll be one of the first with the MCTS Win7 cert and I'll have a jump on the MCITP:DA cert. Makes good sense to me

I think beta exams must be available only for MCPs... because, if is opened for public, many people will register only beacuse it is FREE... like I saw on 70-656 (MDOP), hundreds of people (including some friends) registred and don't sit to do the exam.

@ ahmhdy : It is a beta exam. There is no prep material yet. If you unsure that you will pass you probably shouldn't take this one.

Finally I was able to register, too!

Here in Australia I found this exam to be booked out by the time it was available on prometric website. On the 27th could not book this exam (was not available), 5 am on the 28th it was booked out.

Having been able to participate in a lot of beta exams for new technology this is the first time couldn't get registered.

The WIN7J promo code is used up already and it's just 0930H here in Manila (27 APR 2009). Will there be additional beta exam promo codes?

Promo code isn't working. Seymour, why is this filling up in a matter of hours? Are the same number of slots being issued as for exams in the past? As noted previously it isn't normal to have such a tight window to get registered.

Ok well at least we know it is the demand and not the supply. Pretty amazing. Maybe I'll just fork out the money for it. I want to get that MCITP without having to take the Vista exam.

Too bad I was in the middle of a flight in a plain when the number of seats for the exam was increased. :(

I think you can still pay and take the exam. Yesterday @dallasr was able to book the exam when the voucher code stopped working.

But some people were able to pay for it when there were no seats available anymore ?!? I thought the voucher code simply gives you a 100% discount ?

I've been trying all day as well with the promotional code or an exam voucher and still no luck. There are still seats in my local exam centre, should I pay for it or wait for a few more days?

I woke up around 02:00 local time in the Netherlands (GMT +1)... registered a little time after that, so I guess i was lucky?

Yesterday 'dallasr' was able to book a seat while the code was not working. I have also tried in my end and it did allow me to book by paying but I waited.

I don't think that's the reality, several people where able to sign-up by paying or using a voucher, when the slots where already used up. I would try it for myself, but you can only sign-up once per beta exam :D

In fact, it was really possible to pay for the exam and book it at the moment that the WINj7 code was not valid anymore at the first time.

Defo - because the code is not needed to book the exam, just to get it for free - so not sure why jseymour  says it isn't possible. If it SHOULD NOT be possible, then it is clearly a Prometric "problem".

Oh an guys, jseymour said earlier that all seats are taken and they already issued 400% of the usual beta exam amount, so stop trying (or start paying) :)

Hey guys, for everyone in the US, prometric seems to be having some type of problem. I tried to register with the promo code and it said timeout error. I then paid for the exam and it registered fine at the testing center I wanted.

I called prometric told them of my problem and the lady was nice enough to speak to a manager and override the system so I could register for the exam at no charge. She did say she received an error as well, but then it worked. I will have to cancel my appointment that I paid for. Apparently not all seats have been sold yet.

Doesn't mean it will work for everyone but the site must be overloaded for requests.

If it is possible to register for money, than why do not vouchers work on this beta exam? Is it possible to enable vouchers to work on this beta?

As I understand, situation when people register for money should not be avaliable. But since it is, I think it would be fair to enable vouchers for those, who have them.

Right now I am trying to decide if I should pay and register for the beta or wait untill the release and use the voucher. Just really want to take the exam sooner, I have started preparing for it since the announcement on this blog.

I wasn't able to use the promo code but did get in by paying for it. Used a 50% off partner voucher. I don't want to have to wait until after the beta to take this exam.

I'm a little disappointed to find out about this to late and to learn it from 2 of my co-workers that have no certifications.  I have MCDST and MCITP - Enterprise Support certifications and never received any correspondence that I could have signed up for this.  I took the BETA exam for Vista because I recieved an invitation due to my certification as MCDST.  It seems you kind of ignored us this go around.  Oh well, it is what it is.

Sat the exam today. Can't give feedback as to content, but it was pretty straight-forward.

I left comments for the beta evaluation, linked to each question. I'd suggest all do the same, if you want these open invitations to continue.

How many questions will there be on the original exam (75)?

I sat the exam on monday.  I have to say it's harder than the 70-620 but a lot easier than the 70-622 I did that same day.  So if anyone has done those two exams it's somewhere in between.  Overal a good exam for win7 config I think.

Seemed like a thorough exam although I honestly wasn't prepared enough for it. Some items I'd read about, so hopefully scored high enough to pass. Thinking back on it, it was probably a little easier than the WinXP exam I took a few years ago.

I took it on Tuesday. I agree that it's a bit harder than the 70-620 as weslee said, and there were 1-2 confusing questions, but overall it's a pretty good exam to take. Enjoyed it... :)

Other: On the http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/Exams/70-680.aspx page, it is written that "Published:      June 01, 2009 (in development)". Does this mean that we will get our score report by June 01?

To those who have taken the exam, did you need the full 4 hours or were you able to complete it before the time ran out?

@testtaker it took me about 20-30minutes, however i was illegally parked and in a rush! so i probally failed.

I took this exam yesterday.  I am a little disappointed in the exam content.  I wish I could go into details as to why, but then I would be violating the NDA.

If anyone from Microsoft is still reading this, why don't you limit the next Windows 7 beta exams to those who have passed this one?  Given the number of testers for 071-680, you should have a large enough pool of qualified testers for the next round of beta tests right?

Yep, got the official 'congrats' email from MS.

It appears on the MCP transcript, I can download the digital certificate... no free certificate though... (grrr seperate issue).

thought 680 would count for MCITP Enterprise Admin, does this still count??

Apparently it will count for the MCITP Ent Admin, and the new desktop related 'enterprise' ITP, with one other exam based on deployment. Read this on the born to learn forum, somewhere in the comments from MS

I've passed it too, but I also can't find the score report. I contacted prometric and they said that the score report will be sent to us by Microsoft. I'm looking forward to that.
