New Product Family and Product Category for System Center

We will add a new product family to your WSUS server today – System Center. The System Center product family will contain updates for versions 2012 and higher of System Center products, which include System Center 2012, a product that combines components such as:

Operations Manager
Configuration Manager
Data Protection Manager
Service Manager
Virtual Machine Manager
Endpoint Protection
Orchestrator
App Controller

The System Center product family will allow a variety of update types, e.g. service packs, optional updates, critical updates, and security updates. System Center updates will also be available in the Microsoft Update Catalog at http://catalog.update.microsoft.com.

You will see new product categories appear under the System Center product family as new updates are available for each product or product component. The first product category to be added will be System Center Advisor. For additional information about System Center Advisor, see http://www.SystemCenterAdvisor.com/.

We encourage you to synchronize the System Center product family if you are planning to deploy System Center 2012, either through upgrades or new licenses, or if you already have System Center 2012 products in your managed environment. New Category for Windows Small Business Server

WSUSSCN2.CAB Now Available for MS11-100

Due to the urgency of the MS11-100 release on December 29, 2011, the WSUSSCN2.CAB offline catalog file was not available at the time of the MS11-100 release.

A revised WSUSSCN2.CAB offline catalog file including MS11-100 has been released and is available to support SMS 2003 ITMU, MBSA (in offline mode) and 3^rd party tools that rely on this offline data source.

WSUS (3.x), SCCM, SBS, SCE and MBSA (in online and WSUS modes) were not affected as they use a direct (online) link to Microsoft.com or a local WSUS server as their data source.

New Product Family and Product Categories for Microsoft Online Services

A new product family has been added to your WSUS server –
Microsoft Online Services. The Microsoft Online Services product family
will include updates for the Microsoft Online Services Sign-In Assistant
product categories. A new product category entitled Microsoft Online
Services Sign-In Assistant will allow a variety of regular update types,
such as update rollups, critical updates and security updates, and a product
category entitled Microsoft Online Services Sign-In Assistant (Smart Setup
for First-Time Installations) will contain updates to be used on demand
only when Microsoft Office 365 services are deployed. You will see the new
product family categories as new updates are available for this product.
Microsoft Online Services updates will also be available in the Microsoft
Update Catalog at http://catalog.update.microsoft.com.

Microsoft Online Services Sign-In Assistant allows users
single sign-on and federated identity access to Microsoft Office 365 services.
You should synchronize the Microsoft Online Services family if your
organization has deployed or plans to deploy Microsoft Office 365 services to
ensure this product is kept up to date. For additional information about

Service Pack 1 for Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 Released to WSUS

This service pack includes many interesting improvements and is also a rollup of all fixes that have previously been released for Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 products. Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 Revision Issue Resolved

A revision was made to the WSUS offering for Windows 7 / Window Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on 5/24 to address known installation issues. We are aware that this latest revision is incorrectly reporting as "Not Installed" for machines that have already installed the previous revision of the SP1 update. Also, if this revision is approved for installation, it will reoffer to machines that have already installed the previous revision of the SP1 update. Specifically

Machines that have already installed SP1 do not need to reinstall this update
Machines that have not yet installed SP1 can safely proceed with installing this revision of the update

This issue has been corrected with a revision released Tuesday, 5/31 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. Please be sure to re-sync your servers to obtain the latest revisions and updates to these and other packages.

MS11-018 Internet Explorer 7.0 Cumulative Security Update (KB2497640) Revised

MS11-018 (KB2497640) for Internet Explorer 7.0 has been revised today to correct an error in Microsoft Update logic. The revision corrects an issue that caused the update to incorrectly report that it was already installed on some Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 platforms where it was not installed. Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 updates available on WSUS have been revised

The Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 updates available on WSUS have been revised to ensure that these updates are installed exclusively. This change has been made in response to the issue described in KB975484.

Previously, Service Pack 1 could be installed at the same time as other updates which was reported to cause problems during the installation of Service Pack 1 for some customers. While this change does not fully resolve the issue for customers who have encountered the problem, it will help prevent it from occurring. Note that administrators should ensure that their managed machines are rebooted after installing Service Pack 1 and before scanning for or installing other updates.

New Categories Under BizTalk Family

HIS 2009

There will be a new product category added to your WSUS server Products and Classifications dialog, under the BizTalk family. The new category will be titled Host Integration Server 2009. The Host Integration Server 2009 category will allow all classifications of updates to be offered to the 2009 Host Integration Server product.

Biz Talk Server 2006 R2

There will be a new product category added to your WSUS server Products and Classifications dialog, under the BizTalk family. The new category will be titled BizTalk Server 2006 R2. The BizTalk Server 2006 R2 category will allow all classifications of updates to be offered to the 2006 R2 BizTalk Server product.

BizTalk Server 2009

There will be a new product category added to your WSUS server Products and Classifications dialog, under the BizTalk family. The new category will be titled BizTalk Server 2009. The BizTalk Server 2009 category will allow all classifications of updates to be offered to the 2009 BizTalk Server product.

New Category under the Bing Family

Best Practice Analyzer for WSUS

Greetings WSUS users,

Some of you might not know that Windows Server 2008 R2 has released an update that added new Best Practice Rules to various Server Manager roles, including one for Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). For more information on Best Practice Analyzer, please read this interesting blog from our Windows Server colleagues. What is BPA you ask? Well, you can use the Best Practices Analyzer to scan a server that is running WSUS. A BPA scan of WSUS can help you determine whether WSUS was properly installed and configured on your server. Scan results are displayed as a list of issues that you can sort by severity, and results include recommendations for fixing issues and links to instructions. No configuration changes are made by running the scan. Download the update and run it today!

“Important” drivers will start being targeted to WSUS.

We would like to notify you of a change you will see starting next week. If your WSUS settings are configured to synchronize the “Drivers” update classification then your server will start syncing drivers designated as “Important.”

Important drivers are ones known to address a critical issue. Typically they fix a reliability issue that impacts use of the device or stability of Windows. Important drivers are subject to additional scrutiny and testing, relative to drivers offered optionally through WU to unmanaged clients. For more information, refer to the Windows Logo Program criteria for Important driver updates.

In the past, we heard feedback from the WSUS community that too many drivers for variants of similar hardware were crowding the admin consoles, because the drivers appeared identical in the admin console. Because of this feedback, we temporarily stopped targeting drivers to WSUS servers. We developed a solution to consolidate drivers that are applicable to multiple Plug and Play (PNP) IDs into a single driver update for you to manage and distribute. This drastically reduces the number of driver updates that need to be published, while ensuring you are receiving the latest driver updates that are proven to fix known issues. Even with this improvement, you will still see multiple driver updates for the same changes in some scenarios, but this should be less burdensome than before.

Microsoft .NET Framework 4 and .NET Framework 4 Client Profile will be made available via Windows Server Update Services.

The .NET Framework 4 is Microsoft's comprehensive and consistent programming model for building applications that have visually stunning user experiences, seamless and secure communication, and the ability to model a range of business processes.

The .NET Framework 4 Client Profile provides a subset of features from the .NET Framework 4. The Client Profile is designed to run client applications and to enable the fastest possible deployment for Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Windows Forms technology.

The .NET Framework 4 works side by side with older Framework versions. Applications that are based on earlier versions of the Framework will continue to run on the version targeted by default.

New Product Categories for Forefront

There will be two new product categories added to your WSUS server under the existing Forefront family. Forefront Security for Exchange Server will be used for updates that apply to Forefront Security for Exchange Server version 10.1 (and later). Forefront Security for SharePoint will be used for updates that apply to Forefront Security for SharePoint version 10.2 (and later). These two new categories, and applicable updates, are scheduled to be available the second week of May.

New Product under Windows for EU Browser Choice Update

There will be a new product category added to your WSUS server under the existing Windows family titled “EU Browser Choice Update-For Europe Only” to support the release of the EU Browser Choice update (KB976002). The Browser Choice update is a software update for Windows that Microsoft is required to distribute in Europe as part of legal Commitments to the European Commission. The Browser Choice update is designed to inform customers in the European Union who currently have Internet Explorer set as the default browser on their computers of the other web browsers available to them. The Browser Choice Screen provides consumers with an easy way to see what other web browsers are available, to learn about those browsers and to install them if they choose to do so.
