  • Update on svchost/msi performance issue and 3.0 Client distribution plan

    Hi Folks

In addition to the next week’s  WSUS 3.0 release, we are making the new client portion available via the following plan to our customers who continue to experience performance issues like UI hang and long scan times.

The new WUA client addresses these issues with deep architectural performance optimizations.  Combining the installation of the new client, with the latest MSI fix available in KB927891 available on Microsoft Download Center, will completely address the what we have fondly called the svchost/msi issue.  It’s important to keep in mind that the new client is only a partial solution and clients must have both KB927891 and the new 3.0 client installed for a full solution.

On May 1st,  a standalone version of the client will also be made available to those of you who need to address this performance issue now.  Although this will be immediately available, it  will have to be independently distribute.   Instructions on how to get this standalone new 3.0 client version are available at - http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa387285.aspx

On  May 22nd. The following WSUS 3.0 full and client only updates will be available to WSUS:

Keep in mind that the new client is only a partial solution for the svchost/msi issue and clients must have both KB927891 and the new 3.0 client installed for a full solution.

     ·         A critical update for WSUS 2.0 SP1 which contains the WSUS 3.0 client self update tree.  This critical update, applicable to WSUS 2.0 SP1 Server, if approved will install a new client self update versioned tree on the server.  When mapped clients check in with this updated WSUS 2.0 SP1 server, their clients will check their version against that installed on the server, see that they no longer have the latest version, and immediately self update to 3.0 versions.   The server will remain a 2.0 version with the capability to support the 3.0 clients.

    •  For SBS R2 WSUS 2.0 servers, another  critical update will be made available which will when approved, upgrade the R2 servers to WSUS 3.0.  Subsequent  to upgrade, the former 2.0 clients will self update to version 3.0.
    • For all other servers running WSUS 2.0 (including SBS servers OTHER than R2) we will also be offering a WSUS 3.0 recommended update.   This update, when approved on servers running WSUS 2.0 will upgrade to 3.0, and as with the critical update, cause mapped clients at first check-in with the newly updated server, to self update to 3.0.
    •  For SBS non R2 customers, both of these updates will be available for your approval depending on the update scenario, and or client update path you wish to pursue.

We appreciate your patience while we pushed to make these architectural improvements to the client, and find a way to make them available in a variety of ways to suit your upgrade plans as well as your immediate needs.

Thank you the WSUS v3 team

Update on 5/15: Based on the comments here, a follow-up entry blog entry has been posted @ http://blogs.technet.com/wsus/archive/2007/05/15/srvhost-msi-issue-follow-up.aspx

Please refer to that post for clarifications on expectations after 3.0 client and KB927891 fixes are installed. Please use that post for more feedback.

  • WSUS 3 Developer's Blog - API samples...

Things are starting to get a little quieter here as we finish out the final tasks for this release.  One of those tasks is to help developers build on the product, and make something even better than what we're already providing.

To that end, several of us are starting to work on short snippets of code that demonstrate interesting uses of our API.  If you're new to PowerShell or the WSUS API (or both), you'll be able to take the samples, make a quick start, and actually accomplish some useful tasks.

Some of the samples will help you build your own solutions to some of the common feature requests we didn't get to in this release.

    Some things we're playing with:

    • Start a synchronization on the WSUS server, that you can run from the Task Scheduler.  This will let you build a set of synchronization times that are precisely what you need - rather than X times per day.
    • Gather information about only updates you've approved in your org.  Most of our UI encourages you to get everything Needed out into your organization, but we also realize that just doesn't work for everyone.  With the samples, you'll get a head start in getting just the information you want.
    • Gathering reporting data from the APIs.  Exporting the reports from the UI is useful, but you may want to regularly export the data and show trends for data that your organization cares about.  I've taken one of the samples, and built myself a larger script that checks multiple WSUS servers and shows trending for updates and computers over time.  For some reason, I see a big spike of activity the second Tuesday of every month...  and more and more computers checking in all the time.
    • Curious about another part of the API?  Comment, and let us know what's interesting or confusing!

  • WSUS 3 RC public beta program winding down soon

    Hi Folks -

Just a post to our many RC beta partners dilligently testing WSUS v3 RC in our public program.

First off, many, many thanks for the really impressive testing and awesome feedback you've provided so far on the WSUS 3 RC release.

The quality and volume of new bugs found, and validation of bugs we had suspected or found internally was outstanding.  As we wind down for the final release, we sincerely want to thank you for taking the time to participate in the RC program and giving us feedback and suggestions on the WSUS 3.0 product and experience.

For existing active bugs/feedback items, if you have not attached logs to the item, please check your item and do so before end of day PDT Friday, 4/13/07.  We have propped a revised log collection tool on the download page of the WSUS Connect site.  When run from its installed location this tool will collect all the logs we need and put them in a Cab file for easy attachment to your feedback issue.

For new bugs, they must be filed with logs attached for consideration by the same time, before end of day PDT Friday, 4/13/07.    After that time the feedback page will be disabled for access for the Public RC and the RC bits will be pulled from the download page.  Beta newsgroup access and peer support will remain open until RTW.

Further, I'd like to let you know that one of our partners' EminentWare (http://www.eminentware.com) will  be extending the value and capability of WSUS v3 a few months after release with a WSUS Extension Pack full of many of your wish items we could not complete.  Among a few of them, will be support for a scoped update status report offering just an APPROVED update view vs. all updates across your environment, and the Big Red Button.  Look forward to more news on this in the near future.  If you would like to participate in Eminentware's WSUS Extension Pack beta go to their web site and find the open enrollement for beta 1!

Thanks all for your superior engagement on the WSUS RC - What an awesome group WSUS admins are!!!  Keep that Friday the 13th date in mind - and get those logs attached to any bugs which you know still need them!

Cheers - All of us on the WSUS 3 team!
