  • Update on WUA Srvhost.exe, high CPU consumption and memory consumption issue

Wanted to let you all know there is a revised fix now available for the issue related to the srvhost.exe and 100% CPU utilization.    This issue is described in KB916089 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916089/en-us), and the revised fix is currently only available from Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS).  To obtain this revised hotfix contact Microsoft Product Support Services. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support.

In addition to this fix, there is also a hotfix available for the issue where the Automatic Updates service may increase memory consumption over time and may eventually become unresponsive. The memory consumption increases quickly if the Automatic Updates detection cycle policy is set to do detection frequently, such as every 2 hours.  This issue is documented in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914810/en-us and the associated hotfix is available from PSS.  This hotfix was not revised.

These updates will be available via MU/WU after a complete general-distribution-update package test cycle is completed.  More information on the future availability of these critical updates on the WU/MU sites will posted next week.

    Thanks - Bobbie

  • WSUS and Office 2007 news

    Hey WSUS Admins -

Happy New Year!! Hope you all had great holidays and good times with friends and family throughout!!   As many of you experienced, or probably saw on the news, Seattle was an absolute weather war-zone right before Christmas , with record breaking rains and winds.  After November's rains our Seattle "terra firma" became jello - so all we needed was a great big windstorm to bring our trees down.   And down they came and i mean alot of them!!   What a weather year for the northwest .....we're all just waiting for the firestorms and locust next!!   Oh well, didnt ruin many holidays and we all needed to get in touch with our "pre-power roots" - so I guess it was all good.

On the WSUS related news-front I have some info on Office 2007 and WSUS 3.0.   Office 2007 will definately be added to the WSUS catalog in time for their first update, sometime in the next month or so.  Now as far as the compatibility pack being available via WSUS, thats a bit more complicated.  Heres' the official word from Office on that one.

Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats was not engineered to be deployed to Microsoft Update and WSUS.  The Pack, as designed, needs to target a language-specific version of Office XP/2003, and due to the possible MUI combinations available within an enterprise, there is no way to automatically identify the user’s preferred language.  In addition, installing multiple language-specific versions of the Pack on the same machine is not supported.  Therefore, we are requiring customers to select their preferred language when downloading the Pack from the Download Center.

    thanks -

    Bobbie

  • Winding Down on WSUS 3.0 Beta 2 - and things you want to know

The WSUS 3.0  Beta 2 Program is drawing to a close!

Effective Friday, 1/19/07 the beta 2 bits and feedback submission will be offline on the WSUS 3.0 beta Connect site, as we drive to complete our Release Candidate milestone (RC).

Of coarse, we will still be on the newsgroups and encourage all beta peer
help to continue out there, as will ours.  The only thing we're doing is
pulling the bits from the Connect site download page and cutting the ability to submit feedback via the Connect
page on the Beta 2 build.  All will be back for RC and in the same
    location:)  (https://connect.microsoft.com/site/sitehome.aspx?SiteID=110)

The beta 2 feedback, newsgroup posts and suggestions have been tremendous
and very valuable in helping us to prioritize and understand our product's
issues and areas for improvement from our customers' and partner's
    perspective.

To wind down the beta 2 program, the important points and dates are:

    1.  On Friday, 1/19/2007 The Beta 2 bits will no longer be available for
download from this site. (The RC bits will be when they are released).

    2.   Feedback submission will also be taken down on the Friday, 1/19/07 -
however the read only capability will remain so we keep an archive of the
feedback. (This will be reactivated at RC for bug submission with new
mandatory fields and attachment info required for submitting).

    3.  Beta 2 test deployments will continue to have access and synch update
content from MS servers until 30 (thirty) days AFTER the release of the RC
    candidate.

    4.  RC release is scheduled to release 1st Quarter, Calendar Year 07 - as we
get closer you will see further announcements & information.

The WSUS 3.0 team thanks all beta 2 participants for their valuable participation in this beta,
and look forward to your continued feedback and input when the RC releases!!!

    Thanks!

    The WSUS 3.0 Team
