Hi Folks,
I know there has been some confusion around the DST updates KB928338 and KB929120. Hopefully this will help. Yesterday, Dec 12 we released two time zone updates to WU, MU, WSUS and the catalog. The first of these updates, KB 928388, addresses 30 time zone changes for Windows Operating Systems, and most notably the changes in the US and Canada DST rules for 2007. This update was classified as optional for customers and companies who wish to deploy it now. While this update is being offered as optional now, once Outlook and Exchange tools are completed, so that all updates and tools can be run at the same time, we expect to change the classification of 928338 to high priority or critical. For more information please see: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/timezone/dst2007.mspx.
Yesterday we also released KB929120 to update the DST rules for the West Australia time zone. The State of West Australia recently introduced daylight saving time on a trial basis for the next three years. However, the law was passed after the Global time zone update (KB 928388) was developed and tested, so we could not include the W. Australia rules into the initial package. That means basically that KB929120 only updates the DST rules for the West Australia time zone, and as such, we classified it as a high priority or critical update available to clients that are set to any Australia time zone and that have OS's on any English locale. We decided on this high priority, critical update classification as these customers are the most likely to be affected by this change.
Additionally the update (KB929120) was also made available as an optional update for all other WSUS clients which are not in an Australian time zone, or that are in an Australian time zone but not running an OS with an English locale. Depending on synchronization options, WSUS Admins might see two updates for KB 929120, (as a few have already reported), a critical and an optional update. Both updates are identical, but the detection logic is based on the parameters indicated above. Approving the critical update for install will make the update available on ONLY clients set to any Australia Time Zone and which are on an English locale OS. Approving the optional update will make the udpate available to systems not in an Australian time zone, or that are in an Australian time zone, but not running an OS with an English locale.
Hope this helps - sorry for the lengthy post but want to make sure i address some of this confusion.
thanks,
Bobbie
A new product category entitled Firewall Client for ISA Server was added today to your WSUS server under the ISA product family. This category includes all updates, update rollups, and service packs for Firewall Client software installed on client computers residing in networks protected by Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server. Updates using this category will be available using WSUS. Thanks -Bobbie
WSUS Admins:
I'm behind on my new product category blog posts but this will 'catch me up". Most of you have discovered these two by now, but here here is the belated information. thanks and apologies for the delay - Bobbie
New SMS 2003 Category
WSUS has a new product family (Systems Management Server) and a new product category called Systems Management Server 2003. The first update offered was Service Pack 2 for SMS 2003. SMS 2003’s primary update deployment tool is the Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates that utilizes the WSUS offline catalog (wsusscan.cab). ITMU has and has been updated as of November 2, 2006 to use the new catalog (swusscan2.cab). This new category will allow SMS 2003 to detect and deploy updates for itself. The offline catalog is based on the live MU site (just like the WSUS live catalog) hence the reason this new category will appear in the WSUS Admin console.
Visual Studio:
A new product family for Visual Studio has been added to your WSUS server. WSUS admins can expect most update classifications to be delivered for Visual Studio product categories by subscribing to this product family.
Starting today, the WSUS administrator will notice that the IMF Filters now supersede each other instead of direct expiration of every update. A review of the process over the last couple of months allowed us to identify that the expiration release model just wasn't working. The new model allows a better control of ensuring that an IMF update will always be available even if the release window for the new update is missed.
The new release model will be as follows:
Scott Roberts (Exchange SE)
Exchange SE has released new updates today!
Microsoft Update is now offering V2 of KB 924334 and has expired V1 of KB 924334 on Microsoft Update. KB 911829 is only available at the download center. It will not be offered via Microsoft Update since both updates have the same set of files i.e. the package is identical except for the KB notation in them. Customers can apply either of them or both from the download center.
This new release will eliminate the requirement that the administrator notify the end users to reinstall the S/MIME control from OWA Options. After this fix, users will receive a message which will notify them to upgrade the S/MIME control. The S/MIME control will not be initialized till the user upgrades to the supported version. The user will still have the ability to send unsigned/unencrypted messages using OWA.

The information in the KB and download center information is still for the old release. The outdated information will be refreshed during the week.
