64Bit Database! IBM Announces Trial Software Program for DB2 v8.2.2 Beta for Windows

    Pretty cool stuff!

    From the IBM webpage:

DB2 UDB is the world's fastest database with the #1 TPC-C benchmark in the world that delivered performance over 2.7 times faster than the nearest competitor. Moreover, DB2 UDB V8.2 has just published the fastest TPC-C result on 8-way Intel® Itanium® 2 running 64-bit Window Server 2003. DB2's strong performance advantages are reflected across all platforms supported by DB2 UDB.

Great comment - where do you go for x64 support until the RTM?

On our last post - we had a comment about the RC2 Build crashing and not knowing where to go for support:

    Posted @ 2/25/2005 6:07 PM
On top of that (2 downloads, 2 burns) it crashes on me after install finishes and it reboots. Next, I don't know of a place to report this bug. Great Stuff.

Great Comment - We do have a private newsgroup dedicated for evaluators of our x64 editions where questions just like these can be answered.  The login, password, and instructions on how to access the newsgroup with a newsgroup reader, please click HERE.   Or, if you know what you are doing with a newsgroup reader, just use the following:

    NNTP Server: privatenews.microsoft.com

    Newsgroup: microsoft.private.windowsserver_64bit

    User name: privatenews\64bit

    Password: 64bit

Or, if you are ever away from your newsreader and need to access the newsgroup – we have web-based access to the newsgroup here:

    x64 RC2 Download Error - What happened?

I appreciate everyone's comments about the error that was made when we made the x64 RC2 available as part of the Customer Preview Program (CPP).  For those of you who were not aware of the problem – the 32-bit version of Server 2003 SP1 was accidentally made available as the download for the x64 RC2.

So how do things like this happen?   The answer is pretty simple in this case – ME.

When we decided to move ahead and make the x64 RC2 bits available as part of the CPP, I created a share on my server in my office that JohnB could grab the x64 RC2 ISO from to upload to MS.com.

So what exactly did I do?  I simply was an idiot and grabbed the wrong version from the daily build share to put into my share for John to upload.

    I should have grabbed: w2k3sp1_1433_usa_x64fre_ads.iso

    I grabbed: w2k3sp1_1433_usa_x86fre_ads.iso

    <grovel>

I really want to express my apologies to those of you who went through the entire install only to realize that it was the wrong version – I know what a drag that can be.

    </grovel>

I suppose the good new is we identified the error and we are correcting it  ASAP– and that I will be far more diligent when grabbing bits from the build share.

Further - As punishment for my error, I will be riding in the Chilly Hilly  this Sunday.  You can all rest easy knowing that I will be in some fairly decent pain.

    Have a great weekend,

    64-bit Technical Questions and Elvis

Demorie here…  My car was rear-ended last Friday while sitting at a light outside my office.  This is my first accident (knock on wood) and I was not prepared for the amount of work this entails.  Contact the insurance company; get estimates from the certified auto-body shops, contact the driver that hit me, blah, be blah…not to mention calming my husband down after I explained it to him over the phone. Especially since this is my brand new car!

So, I’ve been dreaming about work lately.  In one dream the other night I was talking with Elvis about my car accident (This dream could have something to do with my husband playing the movie Jailhouse Rock while I slept peacefully through it).  Elvis told me to post my questions about my car accident on the new Windows Server x64 newsgroup.  So with Elvis leaning over my shoulder, I asked all the questions I could think of.

    • Who do I contact first?  The driver that hit me or their insurance?
    • What are the steps I should take to get reimbursed?
    • Also, Why am I dreaming about 64-bit and Elvis?

Don’t do what I did in my dream and ask about your car.  However, you can address any technical questions you may have about Window Server 2003 x64 Editions.  You can find the new private newsgroup at:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/64bit/x64/trial/support.mspx

    Thank you very much…

x64 Streaming Blogcast - How to Maxmize Active Directory Performance in the Enterprise

I need to first say CONGRATULATIONS to John Borozan and his wife (who did all the work) – they are the proud parents of a new baby girl - Helena.  Congrats John!

We mentioned when we started this blog a few weeks ago, one of our goals was to take our online x64 webcasts and port them to a format that could be consumed a little easier….

So I took one of our first (and cooler) seminars – “Maximize Performance in Enterprise Deployments with Window Server 2003 x64 – Level 300” and encoded it into a streaming format that was optimized for Pocket PC’s and other Video Playback devices.

Some boring details:  I used a 96K Bit Rate (Since it was Power Point and Sound) and changed the screen resolution to 208 x 160 which should fit ok on most portable devices – total size = 18.7M  I have done a few tests on the stream and it seems to be working ok

Click here and view the blogcast: http://xpstream.winisp.net/wardralston

    A little about this blogcast:
