We are excited to announce that effective today the latest release of Windows Intune is commercially available. Visit www.windowsintune.com to check it out today. Since its initial general availability just last March, we have added many new enhancements and features to make Windows Intune an even more powerful solution to help you manage and secure your PCs more efficiently and at a lower cost. Many of the improvements in the service have been covered in previous posts on this blog (links are below), but here’s a summary of what’s new:
Software distribution: You can create software application packages, upload them to the Windows Intune service, and deploy these applications to your managed PCs. Windows Intune subscriptions will now include 20 gigabytes of storage on the service reserved for your packages, and you will have the option to purchase more space if needed. You can also package and deploy 3rd party updates. This is done from the Updates Workspace in the console.
Third Party License Management: In addition to managing your Microsoft volume licenses, you can now add third party license agreements, link them to installed applications, and manage nearly all your license agreements in one place.
Enhanced Hardware Reporting: A new set of reports has been included that allow you to create custom reports based on hardware filters such as available hard drive space, and you can save these custom configurations for later use.
Improved Policy Conflict Handling: When there is a conflict between group policy and Windows Intune policy, you are notified in the administrative console, and you can take appropriate action.
Remote Tasks: You can now initiate a number of tasks on a remote PC from within the console. These actions include running a full malware scan, running a light malware scan, updating malware signatures, and rebooting the PC.
User Interface enhancements: Numerous improvements have been made to the administrator console. These include the ability to right-click on objects and produce a context-sensitive menu that gives you actions to perform (such as remote tasks), the ability to drag and drop objects, and multi-section of rows.
Read-only Access: A new role has been introduced which allows the Windows Intune administrator to give access to the Windows Intune account, but without giving that person the ability to change anything. This is useful if you have someone in your organization that needs to be able to run reports or view the Windows Intune data.
If you have a paid Windows Intune account, we will begin updating your account to reflect the new features and improvements in the following weeks and anticipate all updates will be completed before the end of the calendar year. No action will be required of you. Two weeks prior to your update, you'll see an alert displayed in the Windows Intune administrator console indicating the exact date and time when your subscription will be updated. You will continue to go to https://manage.microsoft.com to log in to the administrator console.
If you signed up for a trial before October 17th, your trial will not be moved to the new service. In order to experience the new features and updates, please sign up for a new trial of this latest release. We encourage you to uninstall any previous trial clients you have deployed. If you a have an account in the beta service and have deployed clients, we recommend you uninstall all your beta clients and sign up for a trial or paid account in the released version of the service. All beta accounts and their data will be deleted by November 17th. At that time, the beta service will not be available and the PCs you have in your beta account will no longer be managed by Windows Intune.
You still can't connect remotely to the PC without being initiated by the end user? Seriously??
How many times does this need to be requested before MS realises we're not going to switch to Intune while we still have to keep your competitors product installed on the machines (and pay for it) to do so!
Remote desktop connection is needed as we do not have clients in the front of the workstations at 1:00 AM to initiate the connection. If this is to much to ask then probably a way to setup Intune so after a given time say after business hours administrator logins are permitted without a client to initiate the connection. There are times when a desktop needs to be rebooted if the client is gone from the workstation this means the problem may or may not be fixed upon they return in the morning. Also on the admin portal a filter needs to be there so we can update the status of a workstation, i still have workstations who give the wrong hard drive space being used. This is after i had to drive to the client's location and move files from desktop to the NAS manually. My portal still shows 10 days of old information.
Agree with all these comments....c'mon where's non-end user initiated functionality!
When can we expect to see the ability for Group Policy settings such as background, favorites, network shares and such to be configured with the Policy tool in Windows Intune?
I also would like to see the unattended ability to conenct to a PC. With that feature it will be a no brainer to purchase and pay the ongoing support.
