I wrote back in May about partners who were leaving the Google Apps Partner Program in one way or another. Well today, another established partner, Binary Tree has departed the Google Apps program citing lack of demand for a less capable email solutions. Binary Tree will now focus on the larger opportunity presented by Microsoft Exchange for on-premises and in the cloud.
Binary Tree is the leading provider of cross-platform email migration and coexistence software. They are specialists for helping customers migration from one platform to another or driving coexistence between platforms. So when they initially announced in 2009 that they had a tool to help Lotus Notes customers migrate to Google Apps, this seemed like a feather in Google's cap to be validated by such a trusted company like Binary Tree who has relationships with all sorts of medium to extremely large organizations.
Canaries in the Coal Mine
We all know the cloud isn't magic and as poor as your previous platform may have been, you still want to bring over as much content as possible. Specialists like BinaryTree are at the core of moving businesses to the cloud for the next era of messaging and collaboration. So when a company like this enters your partner program, it means a market is forming....but when they leave, it's disastrous as it's a sign your market isn't driving revenue.
In effect, they are canaries in the coal mine and unfortunately for Google, a little yellow bird just fell off it's perch.
One company innovates. Another bad-mouths the competition. I guess that's the way the world works these days.
Uh, what? If "they" (assume you mean Google) innovates so much, why is their a lack of demand? Lack of demand is why Binary Tree is doing this, per Binary Tree. I've followed this blog for a while now... I realize it gets punchy at times - but I also find it's pretty right on most of the time. Reality vs Hype - not sure that's bad mouthing. It's actually quite refreshing to see Microsoft actually expose some of these realities in this way.

I'm fairly certain Binary Tree left the Google ecosystem because Google launched its own Lotus Notes migration tools and includes them with Apps for free...canary? Hardly.
@Jeff thanks for comment. You are correct that Google has a Notes migration tool but it's so lightweight on capabilities, companies I've spoken with find that it makes them leave behind too much data as well as no way to migrate Notes Apps they end up running Notes still along side Google which defeats the purpose for IT, Users and the org at large.
Binary Tree is adamant that lack of strong market for Google and larger draw to Microsoft are the primary reasons. Hard to refute their own opinion as it's theirs, not mine.
OK, but not what I've heard...if you have credible evidence otherwise (based on customer references or testing of the tool) you should cite it. I've heard the tool is extremely robust and simply made Binary Tree's (paid) tool obsolete.
@Jeff What if I were to do a blog post in the near future comparing Google's toolset to other ones as an example to demonstrate how it does basic elements but doesnt include full migration?
Let's be clear about the wording here. According to Binary Tree there is a lack of demand for Binary Tree to move customers from Notes to Apps. That isn't to say there is a lack of demand to move from Notes to Apps - just what Binary Tree sees. A lot of companies are just happy to save a bundle of cash and move the core email with the free tools.
