Upgrading is common function with Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies, whether it be product specific such as Service Packs and Cumulative Updates or platform specific such as new versions of products or the core operating system.  Prior to upgrading to any version of a product or patching and updating that product you should understand both the process and options and available to you.

This post provides recommended upgrade resources related to Microsoft SharePoint Foundation and Server 2010 and the technologies on which depends separated by both Documentation and Tools resources because I hate looking for this stuff myself.  ;-)

  • I don't understand why this post includes (and even starts with) MOSS 2007 resources.

I also wonder about SQL Server 2005 resources. Isn't it recommended to install the SP 2010 products in SQL Server 2008 ?

  • Hi Mike,

The Office SharePoint Server 2007 resources are intended to provide guidance as related to prerequisites and tools to help facilitate upgrade to Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010, I.e. Service Pack 2 as a prerequisite and preupgradecheck as a tools-based resource.

SQL Server 2005 is supported by Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010; however, most enterprises will likely opt to or have already implemented SQL Server 2008 - though not all inclusive so I anticipate SQL Server 2000 upgrades to SQL Server 2005 as well.

The other consideration are those who are making the move from WSS 2.0/SPS 2003 since their hardware and software requirements will need to meet the minimum hardware and software requirements of Office SharePoint Server 2007 and subsequently Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 - there will be some legacy software in these cases so double-hop upgrades can be expected.

    Thanks for the comment.

    Bill
