Today Microsoft and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) announced a three-year Joint Enterprise Licensing Agreement (JELA) for Microsoft enterprise licensing and Software Assurance.  According to the press release, the agreement will “modernize technology infrastructure, reduce costs and foster new levels of cross-agency collaboration” within the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force and Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA).

The JELA is one of the most comprehensive Enterprise licensing agreements (ELAs) that Microsoft has ever created for the DoD, covering nearly 75 percent of all DoD personnel.  Spanning the Army, Air Force, and DISA, it provides significant potential cost savings through economies of scale, while
delivering access to the latest Microsoft technology.  The ability to standardize on the newest Microsoft products, such as Office 2013, SharePoint 2013 and Windows 8 has the potential to unlock new levels of cross-agency collaboration.

See what InformationWeek has to say about the news in yesterday's article, "Military Signs Most Comprehensive Microsoft Contract Yet."

All Volume License Enterprise Agreement eligible products are available through the JELA, including the Microsoft Core CAL Suite, Office Professional Plus, SharePoint Enterprise, and Windows Professional Upgrade.  Furthermore, by combining three previous ELAs into a single agreement, the combined buying power of all three organizations reduces the costs through volume discounts resulting in significant savings.
