Licensing Simplification – A New Approach to the Product Use Rights (PUR)

Over the years, the Product use Rights (PUR) have grown in complexity as new products and new business models have been introduced.  We heard your feedback that use rights need to be simpler and responded with the release of the October 2011 “Re-Designed PUR” to improve navigability, readability and to ensure consistent language across all the product families.  Now, as a further improvement to the PUR, part of the August 1, 2012 PUR refresh, we offer a “Simplified PUR” with dramatically reduced and less complex language intended to:

  • Enhance the customer experience
    • Provide clear enterprise licensing rules
    • Inspire and enable compliance
  • Provide concise license models
    • Emphasize core use rights
    • Allocate risk reasonably

Our objective is to support the core use rights that accompany the products while still providing clear licensing rules. While the new language does not change the use rights, it provides a new simplified approach intended to reduce content, and state the basic licensing rules in a less complex manner to enable easier reading and understanding.

This new approach will be expanded to include all products with the release of the October 2012 PUR.  We hope the changes improve your ability to easily recognize and understand how we license our products. And, with our customers’ continued feedback, we will continue to work toward further improvement.
