Mid-September Microsoft had the opportunity to sponsor the Gartner ITAM Summit in Orlando, Fla., where we announced new software asset management (SAM) services. (Check out our full recap of the event >>HERE<< )

Following the successful announcement at Gartner ITAM, we wanted to take a moment to give a deeper dive into SAM services and explore the added value these services provide.   

Our SAM services vision is for all customers to have the knowledge and resources they need to optimize their SAM practices and realize maximum value from their software investments. This includes the ability to manage changes in technology, improve competitive advantage, and reduce security, legal and financial risks. To that end, Microsoft provides guidance, tools and resources which give customers a head start on building best practices for software asset management, and to connect customers with highly trained, qualified partners who can help them achieve their goals. 

There are three components of SAM services, each individually adding value, but when combined, they really help a company develop a strong SAM practice.  

  • SAM Baseline:  The SAM Baseline provides an organization with an inventory of deployed Microsoft assets, a review of Microsoft licensing entitlements, and the identification of any over- or under-licensed assets.    
  • SAM Assessment: The work conducted during a SAM Assessment leads to the development of a customized report that details a customer’s existing SAM processes against the SAM Optimization Model framework, identifying opportunities for improvement and associated ROI.
  • SAM Deployment Planning: This service helps customers determine which SAM solutions are best for their environment to improve software deployment, metering, inventory and control, and then provides deployment assistance for the chosen solutions.  Check our website for more information on SAM tools. 

Just as important as the components and tools available through SAM services, is the impact the program can make on an organization. Many teams and departments of an organization can benefit. 

  • IT Staffs will be able to more efficiently plan upgrades and deployments while lowering associated training costs. They will also be able to better demonstrate the true value of IT assets with more accurate data. And, they’ll be able to more effectively manage security threats, such as viruses or hacking attempts.
  • Department Managers can ensure better budget planning with more accurate data and improve procurement and deployment procedures with centralized control.
  • Legal Departments will benefit from the more complete documentation of compliance with legal, government regulations and corporate policies, reducing legal risk.
  • Purchasing can reduce the risk of over-licensing, and simplify reporting, budgeting and acquisition of IT assets.
  • Human Resources will be able to ensure employee compliance which minimizes legal and security threats.
