Q:  (from Bruce)

I just read your article on the free upgrade to Win Server 2008 R2 standard but saw that the time frame expired a while back. Do you know what product we would need to buy and if it is possible to do a “In-place” upgrade of Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard" ?

A:

We have a great document, Introduction to Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation, that has a section, Upgrading Windows Server 2008 Foundation, that describes the supported upgrade path.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744832(WS.10).aspx

Upgrading Windows Server 2008 Foundation

Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation supports the following upgrade scenario:

  • “In-place” upgrade of Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard.

Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation does not support the following upgrade scenario:

  • “In-place” upgrade of Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Core.

While this upgrade is supported, like always, please make a backup of your server before you make a change like this.  We have tested this upgrade scenario, but there may be third party applications (like Anti-virus) that could impact your ability to upgrade the server.  Having a good backup is crucial if you run into problems during the upgrade process.

I hope this helps with your upgrade plan.

Until next time,

Rob

How can the same thing be supportet and on the same time unsupportet?
    This is completely unlogiacal!

  • Test, try rereading the last part of the actual answer again. You missed something.
