In my last post we saw how to clean, transform and join datasets. I also mentioned I had trouble doing the join at all and even now it’s not quite right so how can we look at the data and find out what’s going on.  The visualisation option only shows a few rows of the 2 million in the dataset and there’s not really anything in ML Studio to help.

Over the last few months myself and my company have started to look at and use the power of social media to make sure we get our message out to our customers, So I thought some of my fellow IT professionals may find it interesting to see how we’ve got on and indeed why bother with this social media lark?

I know it can be a terrible thing to consider, but sometimes IT professionals and Marketing professionals need to work together, scary stuff indeed. All joking aside, miscommunication or the inability to collaborate in the workplace is damaging to business.

Twenty years ago in a building far far away I led a small project team inside HM Customs & Excise (way before it merged into HMRC). Our application was designed to get investigators to share information previously held in locked cabinet and notebooks to improve intelligence gathering and ensure operations didn’t inadvertently overlap. 

I tend to work on big IT infrastructure projects which by their nature means I interview many people both internal to the organisation and externally. Furthermore I often find myself as unofficial career guidance for ex-colleagues and friends where I know their qualities but often don’t see this written down. 

When I once told my doctor I worked in IT, he told me everyone now works in IT - 15 years later I’m telling organisations that IT now needs to work with everyone. 

As IT Professionals, it is all too easy to lose sight of the impact our daily job can have on the poor, unsuspecting species known as the ‘user’. It could be said that having spent the last 20 plus years entirely working in or around the IT industry, I am both long in the tooth and set in my ways. 

In my last post we looked at how to load data into Microsoft Azure Machine Learning using the browser based ML Studio. We also started to look at the data around predicting delayed flights and identified some problems with it and this post is all about getting the data into the right shape...
