Is the World Ready for SQL Server 2008 ?
SQL Server 2008, the latest version of the Microsoft database platform, is due for release in second quarter 2008. Microsoft Corporate Vice President of the Data and Platform Storage Division, Ted Kummert, talks with Karen Forster, editorial strategy director of SQL Server Magazine, about key features of SQL Server 2008.
Build a Metadata-Driven ETL Platform by Extending Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services
Microsoft SQL Server™ 2008 Integration Services (SSIS) enables enterprise customers to create, deploy, and manage high-performance data integration solutions. Some of the most common scenarios of using SSIS are building data warehouses (DW) and developing business intelligence (BI) solutions. A data warehouse is defined by Bill Inmon as “a subject oriented, integrated, time variant, nonvolatile collection of data in support of management decision.” Extract, transform, and load (ETL) is a crucial process in data warehousing that involves extracting data from outside sources, transforming it to fit business needs, and ultimately loading it into the end target, usually the data warehouse. ETL is an important part of the process of bringing heterogeneous and asynchronous source extracts into a homogeneous environment.
White Paper: SQL Server 2008 Performance and Scale
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 incorporates the tools and technologies that are necessary to implement relational databases, reporting systems, and data warehouses of enterprise scale, and provides optimal performance and responsiveness. With SQL Server 2008, you can take advantage of the latest hardware technologies while scaling up your servers to support server consolidation. SQL Server 2008 also enables you to scale out your largest data solutions.
White Paper: SQL Server 2008 Manageability
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 builds on the management capabilities of previous versions, and provides a variety of tools and frameworks to help you manage your enterprise data environment. The comprehensive management automation capabilities of SQL Server 2008 reduce the administrative overhead that is required to maintain data services and ensure compliance with change management policies. A new end-to-end performance monitoring and analysis suite helps you to optimize the responsiveness and scalability of your SQL Server services across the enterprise, and the scalable management interfaces and tools help you to reduce server management effort and focus on higher value activities.
White Paper: Online Transaction Processing in SQL Server 2008
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 provides a database platform that is optimized for today’s applications and that can scale for any size of business. It drives cost efficiencies by dramatically reducing downtime, and by enabling dynamic and proactive management that significantly reduces administrative overhead. Finally, SQL Server 2008 provides a highly secure platform that you can trust with your organization’s sensitive, business-critical data.
White Paper: Security Overview for Database Administrators
SQL Server 2008 is secure by design, default, and deployment. Microsoft is committed to communicating information about threats, countermeasures, and security enhancements as necessary to keep your data as secure as possible. This paper covers some of the most important security features in SQL Server 2008. It tells you how, as an administrator, you can install SQL Server securely and keep it that way, even as applications and users make use of the data stored within.
Database Encryption in SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition
With the introduction of transparent data encryption (TDE) in SQL Server 2008, users now have the choice between cell-level encryption as in SQL Server 2005, full database-level encryption by using TDE, or the file-level encryption options provided by Windows. TDE is the optimal choice for bulk encryption to meet regulatory compliance or corporate data security standards. TDE works at the file level, which is similar to two Windows® features: the Encrypting File System (EFS) and BitLocker™ Drive Encryption, the new volume-level encryption introduced in Windows Vista®, both of which also encrypt data on the hard drive. TDE does not replace cell-level encryption, EFS, or BitLocker. This white paper compares TDE with these other encryption methods for application developers and database administrators. While this is not a technical, in-depth review of TDE, technical implementations are explored and a familiarity with concepts such as virtual log files and the buffer pool are assumed. The user is assumed to be familiar with cell-level encryption and cryptography in general. Implementing database encryption is covered, but not the rationale for encrypting a database.

Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 Beta for ADO.Net Entity Framework Beta 3
SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 Beta release for the ADO.Net Entity Framework Beta 3 enables the following scenarios:
· Applications can work in terms of a more application-centric conceptual model, including types with inheritance, complex members, and relationships
· Applications are freed from hard-coded dependencies on a particular data engine or storage schema
· Mappings between the conceptual application model and the storage-specific schema can change without changing the application code
· Developers can work with a consistent application object model that can be mapped to various storage schemas, possibly implemented in different database management systems
· Multiple application models can be mapped to a single storage schema
· Language-integrated query support provides compile-time syntax validation for queries against a conceptual model
Microsoft Office Visio 2007 Professional SQL Server Add-In
Visio Infrastructure for SQL Servers is a tool which is meant for IT administrators who require constant interactions with the users for the installations of the SQL server in any IT infrastructure. This tool eases the constant communication between the end user and the administrator where administrators will have a ready to install visual representation of data which can be executed later to build the infrastructures efficiently. This diagrammatic representation of SQL Servers with the configuration data of each server will help installation implementation with less communication with the end user. The objective of this tool is to prove the capabilities of Visio to draw the effective diagrams using Visio SDK.
